I did not like that game said Tim-I-am, no way, no ma'am.
Nothing like a nice little trip across the border to see our friendly neighbors to the north and OMIGOD THEY WERE MEAN I WAS TOLD THEY WERE NICE. Just an absolute new-guy-in-jail pumping. We got thoroughly beat up and down the ice and the only reason we were in that game was a couple well timed PP goals and Markstrom.
There was no one player that I will point a finger at because they were all bad, except for Nico Jack and Markstrom. I'd love to see Marky stay on his feet on that 3rd tying goal, but with the best goal scorer in the league given a free lane to the net.. if he stays up, Matthews rips it low, if he goes down he goes over his shoulder. No reason for DIllon to ride Marner into the boards, Nico got caught flat-footed because Bratt stopped skating with Matthews. Bad Change on the OT winner that we all saw, I don't need to get into it.
There are some very concerning trends since that road trip, and while we have collected some points, our scoring struggles continue and we seem to be giving up far too much time in the DZone. Our 10-game moving average on xGF% (both all situations and 5v5) has moved from it's peak of 64% in mid-December to below 50% after last night. Same for our CF% and Fenwick %: the 10-game moving average has slipped below 50% from their peak of 59%. This means we are both generating less offense, as well as giving up a lot more defensively - and I think we all see this happening.
I took a look at some numbers as the finishing numbers have me very concerned. We don't seem to have any pure fear-of-god snipers and our top 6 is volume guys (Jack/Timo) or playmaker hybrids (Bratt/Nico). our bottom 6 is ...hahah.

You can see in these numbers that we were slightly PP dependent as evidenced by our merchant behavior early in the season. But that has dried up recently, we all know that. But our problems run a little deeper based on some publicly available data, and from what I can interpret: our shooters suck and/or are getting unlucky (from moneypuck)

ANOTHER compounding issue has been a lack of production from the D Corps. If you take our Irish Prince Seamus out of the totals, we have 14 goals from our defense, here are the bottom 10 teams on the season:

Not exactly the best company. Toronto can get away with this because of the aforementioned hairline challenged Matthews.
A large contributor to that issue is Dougie's lack of actual scoring. I looked into if there is any sort of glaring differences with 22-23 (his best career season), and his shooting and offensive metrics are nearly identical across the board, and in some cases are better. His shooting % has fallen off a cliff, so I'm not sure if this is still injury related? A pec is an important muscle for shooting. Is he just... missing? Numbers from Moneypuck:

AND he hasn't lost a step contrary to popular opinion. In fact he has gotten faster relative to the league (NHL Edge data). He is in the 75th percentile for top skating speed compared to below the 50th in 22-23. His speed burts have been under 50th for both seasons, but his relative rates compared to the league are better than he was in 22-23. League average speed bursts over 20mph were 25, he had 9 in 22-23. This year? League average is 18 total, and he has 10.
So not really a recap. Sorry about that, I kinda got sidetracked, because I think it's important to understand why our offensive issues are happening. Is positive regression coming? It better be, because this is not sustainable.
I'd also use Clear Sight but the interface is dumb because the owner, Valiquette, is dumb. Suck a dick buddy.
