[00:00:06] Hey everyone, Mr. Delva here at Sanidad, a three time Stanley Capchants and the Los Angeles
[00:00:12] Devil.
[00:00:13] You're listening to the Uncle Puckers, who jersey devil podcast with Chris Dan Bobby
[00:00:18] and Tony and the Uncle Puckers.
[00:00:20] Let's go, Devils!
[00:00:24] Hey, what's up everybody?
[00:00:25] Thanks for checking out the Uncle Puckers.
[00:00:28] I'm Chris, along with Tony and Bobby today.
[00:00:31] And we got a bunch of fun stuff to go over today.
[00:00:34] We got the Games 5 and 6 of the 2000 Stanley Cup Finals that we're going to go over
[00:00:40] and we will put that run to bed before we tackle 2003.
[00:00:45] And then hopefully next summer we're doing the 2024 New Jersey Devil's Cup Run.
[00:00:51] No, or 2024 25, rather?
[00:00:53] That would be awesome.
[00:00:54] So, good morning everybody.
[00:00:55] How is everyone doing on this fine Labor Day Monday?
[00:00:59] What's up?
[00:01:00] Feeling great.
[00:01:01] Chris, we have an extra body here today so this is going to be interesting.
[00:01:05] I forget how to have a three-way conversation and we all have a glass on it's very weird.
[00:01:12] I mean, I wear mine all the time but it's like it's crazy Bobby when I see you put your glasses
[00:01:16] on like you turn into your phone.
[00:01:18] And then go junior to those little little bit.
[00:01:21] It's funny.
[00:01:22] If Dan go the Los 80 pounds that's what bought between that and if you like made it with
[00:01:26] a singer for Bindot oil, you would have that combo right there.
[00:01:29] You know, this is a funny part like I shouldn't even need it for the beginning of the show
[00:01:32] because all I'm referencing is my own written notes and then I realize how like disgusting
[00:01:37] I write and I need my glasses just to make them make sense.
[00:01:40] So yeah you turn into your father as soon as you put them on it's crazy.
[00:01:44] Gotcha.
[00:01:45] So, but um, alright so what's everybody doing today on this holiday?
[00:01:53] Lazy day other than bro in a beer competition one of two.
[00:01:57] So this is a beer brewing competition you're doing.
[00:02:01] Yeah, this is a cake competition you bring your beers you serve to the public.
[00:02:04] You're judged by professional judges on merit of style and execution of your beer.
[00:02:09] But then you're also judged by the people's choice which is just kind of like the token game
[00:02:13] and walk around they sip everything there's usually you know 15 to 20 plus brewers and you know 40
[00:02:20] some odd beers and you know they just put the token in your cup and at the end you're trying
[00:02:25] to win you know the people's choice is the great one to win because that's just kind of the popular vote
[00:02:30] and the the judging thing that's a little more you know analytical and like you're being audited.
[00:02:36] What do you want your stuff?
[00:02:38] So this competition is actually the inverse of most that I do most when you do a
[00:02:43] people's choice that's the one where you would win say the money.
[00:02:47] And this one for some reason they prefer to do the judges so first place judging overall beers
[00:02:52] five hundred dollars seconds.
[00:02:54] 50 and third is a hundred and then the people's choice is just gloating you know
[00:03:00] bragging right.
[00:03:01] That used to be the one that was the money and then I did other ones where a third award
[00:03:05] would be a brewers choice award which was really cool because that was like being judged by your
[00:03:09] peers only the brewers can vote and I'd won that once before too.
[00:03:13] So it's really good to get anywhere to go to the body wins.
[00:03:17] But it's a last year and actually came I got third and it actually came in gift cards to
[00:03:23] a local restaurant brewery so it wasn't actual cash that last year.
[00:03:27] Well, I got to play the game right because there's the judging aspect that you want to have like two
[00:03:31] style beers and then there's the pop who's their vote and it's funny for as many of these
[00:03:35] brewfesse have done you get a lot of people come that aren't beer drinkers per se it's not a bunch
[00:03:40] of beer snob's walking around telling you like what's the ratio of men and women there.
[00:03:44] Pretty good.
[00:03:45] What did you have?
[00:03:46] Really?
[00:03:46] Honestly God it's an event it's a fun event it's not like you know this like of this beer
[00:03:50] snob thing so what I've noticed is that people like people's choice one if you
[00:03:55] got a really solid like perfectly made IPA or pills or something that's going to get recognition
[00:03:59] but most of these people are looking for something over the top and crazy something that really
[00:04:04] fits to them because again they're not the beer drinkers you would think of their miller
[00:04:07] like people they're just out having a good time and so I am making a stop but I don't have a
[00:04:12] word for this it doesn't exist in a judging realm so I got to kind of put it in other so
[00:04:17] it's a double chocolate Irish oatmeal sweets out with coffee and each one of those is its own
[00:04:24] independent category but I couldn't do that so basically this thing is just nestled with chocolate
[00:04:27] throughout the entire process so it is an alcoholic beer at like 7% it's got all the balance
[00:04:33] that you want a beer but then it's also going to be like liquid chocolate but not like one of those
[00:04:38] weird donut type beers we're all this crazy sugar stuff isn't there's a balance good
[00:04:42] beer it's pretty good full on chocolate yeah you know a hoppy shit you like all the hoppy beer
[00:04:47] yeah I'm into that I do not like to break or pills and I was such a lame like I'm like I want
[00:04:52] to have the yellowists just bland this beer I don't know yeah there's a different between
[00:04:56] hoppy and bitter so that's another conversation we can have I mean I like I like to drink it in the
[00:05:01] summer time I like corona I'm just like E.C. Corona would align I'm a happy guy when it's you know
[00:05:08] super hot out I love Guinness so I do like the dark stouts I like like blue moon I like
[00:05:16] like gingling I like there are a few of them but a lot of them are just like the IPAs that are
[00:05:21] so bitter I cannot drink them we have for me man it's a little too much I like waterlands it's
[00:05:27] like blue moon sound ever now is this the only one you do or do you do other beers this is the only
[00:05:36] pouring competition currently that I do and then throughout the year if I have stock ready
[00:05:41] I do a lot of just bottle drop off so you just literally drop off this expak your beer it's not
[00:05:46] caged these actually have to be caged and served you just drop it off they ship it off and then
[00:05:51] they send you a metal or something so because I the next one that you do like this if I would have
[00:05:56] known about this my wife and I would have come up for it today like we were just talking about this is
[00:06:03] so when's the I'm growing today I've got two beers to brew the actual festival is Saturday
[00:06:08] October 26th really yeah I gotta make the stout nice and early let that thing settle and build
[00:06:13] I thought it was the festival was today oh I wouldn't I wouldn't have time if I were at the festival
[00:06:17] I thought you were 100% honest you know I would just go into do the festival no no I you
[00:06:23] got to get there like three or four hours early to get your beer settled to get the judging samples
[00:06:26] done and basically you're testing everything before the people show or go ready like yeah all right
[00:06:32] I'll think it's in by dude send me a day not a Sunday right it's a Saturday yeah okay so no Christmas
[00:06:37] ready for some Sundays so yeah I am ready to time some days and it starts this Thursday football season
[00:06:42] starts I can not wait yeah do you do you if you're off what do you do do you like cook food
[00:06:49] of your house and you I know you're cook all the time so you probably don't want to do that but
[00:06:53] what is your ritual if you're gonna be all one of liking this game say some a night game or you know
[00:06:58] I'm pretty easy like I just you know I'll just make usually like on playoffs or Super Bowl
[00:07:05] if we're home like we'll make like wings and chilly and all that stuff and watch the game
[00:07:09] but if it's just a regular game like I'm 90% at a time like my wife my kids are in an out of
[00:07:14] the house and I'm just sitting there watching the game you know nobody nobody watches it with me nobody
[00:07:20] cares nobody my family gives us shit they just leave that alone and let them yell at the TV
[00:07:24] like a crazy old person which is what I do so but no I don't have big rituals most of the time
[00:07:30] I'm stuck at work so like this Sunday I'll be working which is I don't mind because the
[00:07:36] devil and the devil's the Vikings are playing the giant so at least it'll be on regular TV
[00:07:41] and then I need you to send me that link again at some point but what about you I mean you
[00:07:46] get up at like five in the morning to watch the writer yeah yeah so I just feel it works
[00:07:50] like this a one-to-clock game is for is you know here it's 11 o'clock in the night work
[00:07:54] so one-to-clock game is eight o'clock here so a four-cloth that's not that much
[00:07:59] the writers are usually four so choose to do eleven I you know I could deal with that
[00:08:02] the worst is like obviously the Monday nights with the Thursday nights which I do I never miss a
[00:08:06] reader game um my wife I've even been the last couple of years I haven't had her watch them and
[00:08:11] I'm making some taking her to a first reader game this year and Tampa so I'm kind of trying
[00:08:15] to get her into that you know now she my wife you know unfortunately she likes you if you're
[00:08:20] good looking if you're not a good look like you know should I touch you choose us her players
[00:08:23] she picks up like that as you choose her puckers yeah she choose my god it
[00:08:28] in she doesn't like the night oil body but you know it's funny because uh I was you know
[00:08:35] like you say like how she likes good-looking people like that's it's so root for I think that's
[00:08:40] a lot of people that aren't into this words like I was we were moving my daughter into her
[00:08:44] arm on Friday and she has a friend who lives in Ohio who is a huge devil fan and she turns around
[00:08:52] and I forget the kids name but she says to me on Friday my daughter she's like whatever her name
[00:08:56] is wants to come on your show wants to go on the Uncle Puckers and piss and moan about that
[00:09:01] jacket has a girlfriend and then she's super upset about this and but and I said does she actually
[00:09:06] listen to our show she's like I don't know if she does but I don't she's a huge devil fan and
[00:09:11] she knows you guys do the podcast and she just like you know goes to tell you that this tell
[00:09:15] you dad that tell you that just because you like Strakews because he's good-looking.
[00:09:19] sure it's not a question guys if you guys are jack-use and I want you to be honest here okay
[00:09:24] do you have a girlfriend or you insane I mean I'm here we have a self-question
[00:09:30] I mean that age or my life I don't know but I mean if you're that age put yourself at that age
[00:09:35] I remember and you know what one of the focus I remember all you guys at high school so that's not
[00:09:39] I listen you know obviously we're not gonna be hockey players right so jack's peaking at his
[00:09:43] profession I peaked at my profession in college and I had girlfriend in college so yeah I guess I probably
[00:09:48] would have a girlfriend. I mean I might have my life dude I mean let's face it.
[00:09:53] this is but as much as I'm looking forward to football season I'm looking forward to hockey season
[00:10:00] even more I really am this is just because I've been answering questions Chris you didn't answer
[00:10:04] what I have girlfriend I don't know it sends on the girl I mean I guess it's tough you know I mean
[00:10:10] it's you know there's always that thought in your head like yeah I'm a millionaire I'm 20 something
[00:10:15] years old I can just go and do whoever and whatever I want but there's also you know nice to
[00:10:21] sometimes just love me to somebody that you love yeah exactly I know you're a funny untrusty
[00:10:29] I know I'm a fire state building oh she's wrong in Empire State Building when were there
[00:10:37] ever that he went there oh man talk about an inverse of a rom-com so yeah it's part of story
[00:10:45] though I guess we should tell the story real quick to tell you brother okay let's leave it right
[00:10:50] all right well great vampire we'll save the Empire State building you guys remember to
[00:10:55] we were driving that day I remember how we almost didn't make it for sure yeah it's not
[00:10:59] good my my dad's old beat up be a good guy like we had to have the heat on it football blast
[00:11:05] and the link in tunnel because it was all over eating oh my god it was taking on the Empire State
[00:11:15] Chris I remember me you look at her trying to like what the fuck this is going to be the longest
[00:11:18] ride home well I remember going there we were trying to talk them out of it like this probably
[00:11:24] isn't a good idea Bobby and yeah he didn't yeah oh it was a hot head what are you gonna do
[00:11:30] that's how my wife that story last month actually that's how I remember that I was like oh my god
[00:11:34] I don't think we talked about this we bring this up around Bobby that was a
[00:11:38] that one from the mullipunker army there you go it's a good one for me
[00:11:43] we will tell the story if you want to hear the Empire State story just send us a message
[00:11:49] and we will definitely go over it maybe we won't win Bobby's well I actually want you to
[00:11:54] hear Bobby I want you here because I want the commentary for me before we get into what we're
[00:12:01] going to do today we do have to you know just at least mention the absolute tragedy that happened
[00:12:08] over the weekend and everybody knows what I'm talking about the death of Johnny and Matthew the
[00:12:13] hero this is just there's no words I mean there's really no words this poor family and what
[00:12:21] they are going through now regardless of whether or not he was a hockey player in the NHL it's
[00:12:25] just tragic there are two only two sons gone because some asshole not only was he drunk driving
[00:12:32] he was literally drinking while driving yeah had open beers or whatever when he was driving
[00:12:40] and had the accident it's just fucking heartbreaking I couldn't believe it and you know we're
[00:12:46] on a time difference here so like I remember like you guys had done a show that night and when
[00:12:52] you guys got off the show because I didn't make the show because I didn't take my kiss to school
[00:12:55] that morning I remember seeing something about it and I right away you know how you know
[00:13:00] something's really even though you hope it's not like I kind of knew a little bit and actually
[00:13:04] the reporter who we put which is deserving like a fire who reported when he wasn't supposed
[00:13:09] to from right I see as I fell down for your reporter I think he can't him because people were
[00:13:13] trying to beat each other to the story and to me it was so devastating and I was like I actually
[00:13:19] didn't watch anything hockey related until I signed on to this podcast tonight again because
[00:13:23] it was depressing I mean dude that is exactly how I feel dude you just nailed it so Chris and
[00:13:28] I get off the show was pretty late you know we do work and then we had to do late night show and
[00:13:33] I got off and I was just scrolling for a couple of minutes for Ben I saw one post about it
[00:13:37] and I just figured not to Twitter twitters usually just crap and I just you know I went to bed
[00:13:42] in the next morning you were talking about it this one really stinks man like it's really hit me hard
[00:13:47] I couldn't listen to our show like I just like you I just I wanted nothing to do with hockey
[00:13:51] I couldn't I couldn't celebrate kind of anything and it's just really super tragic and the thing that
[00:13:56] makes it worse is that this one's getting a lot of attention because it's the hockey community and
[00:14:01] we're so entrenched and we're seeing it even more than maybe pastor by fan baseball games are doing
[00:14:05] I guess this kind of thing happens all the time you know the fact that we heard about it is because of the
[00:14:10] circumstance that we heard about it and it's sickening and it affected so many lives and it didn't have to
[00:14:15] happen and then this scumbag if anybody sees it like was audibly disappointed that he had to spend extra time in
[00:14:23] his cell because it was a holiday weekend before he had the possibility of like parole and now so we have a
[00:14:28] much bigger problem than just like we have like a society problem as a species like it's really
[00:14:34] concerning now that you can do this and then
[00:14:37] feel like well now you're in convincing me you know like what I said I'm sorry I didn't mean to do it can't we just
[00:14:43] move on like no mother fucker get used to that cell what you you need to understand what you did instead
[00:14:48] he's like this is a long weekend would be here for extra few days what and it's just 20 years you scumbag
[00:14:52] what a fact in a child he affected parents he affected a one he changed so many lives with that
[00:14:58] student who just that the D that he did and he's worried about that you think of all the
[00:15:01] life he changed yeah Hopkins one thing doesn't this is so much bigger than that like if you think
[00:15:06] his kids life his wife's wife his sister was I mean it's absolutely I think Bob you said it
[00:15:12] and that where we're all talking like you couldn't have wrote the story any worse like everything was just so
[00:15:17] awful how long done and this guy should definitely go away forever my I know sympathy for him he's a
[00:15:27] guess the drinking definitely made me impatient not the drinking made me impatient that's all you
[00:15:33] can say about this you know and you know it was and I did listen to some stuff over the weekend
[00:15:40] and just some tributes and stuff and the one thing that kind of struck me the most and you know we don't
[00:15:46] know Johnny goodgero we didn't know him and no the only thing that we know about him is a couple
[00:15:52] years ago that he was you know gonna probably come become a devil before he ended up going to
[00:15:57] Columbus but you hear people talking from from Boston College where he played right and that
[00:16:05] how many lives he touched there in his three years up there they consider him one of them
[00:16:12] listening to people in Calgary going on about what a great guy he was how open and accessible he was
[00:16:19] to everybody at all times just a genuinely good person they considered him one of theirs Columbus
[00:16:27] the exact same thing and they consider him one of theirs and he was born here in Jersey so he
[00:16:34] in this area the Philadelphia area he's one of ours this one guy who touched so many communities
[00:16:40] and just by being a good person by just doing the right thing and giving a shit about people
[00:16:47] and he's senselessly killed by somebody who has zero empathy who does not give a shit about people
[00:16:52] and it is really disgusting but that's the one thing I took away was like anywhere that this guy
[00:16:58] went he had a positive effect and influence on the area and he will be missed and is it really
[00:17:05] is an absolute sad sad situation and I I don't know how Columbus recovers I don't know how his
[00:17:11] family recovers I don't know how any of that do so I mean it's still post-bones the wedding sure
[00:17:17] right of course but eventually she's gonna get married that's gonna haunt her no matter when it is
[00:17:21] year from now five years from now it's gonna be like remember what happened last time I tried to get married
[00:17:25] but this is a tragedy that's never gonna go away no and and I do feel like I got one more
[00:17:29] thing I have to say on behalf of our show and I shouldn't have to say it but we did just start off
[00:17:33] talking about a proof vest and as kind of the avid beer guy on this show as somebody who if I
[00:17:38] actually had my choice in career I'd probably be a professional broer I just gotta say there is a way
[00:17:43] to do both and do it right you do not have to drink and drive it is ridiculous especially in today's
[00:17:48] world I mean yesterday we were out at a labor day party and I did my part we were there for seven hours
[00:17:54] I had my three beers the first two hours that I had nothing like that was it I'm done I'm not risking it
[00:17:58] there's other people on the road too it's just not worth it when I do these proof vest we advocate
[00:18:03] people getting rides it's out of firehouse with at least like it's always an option
[00:18:07] and yet here we are like pushing a good time that has alcohol involved but staying safe the two can
[00:18:13] happen like you don't have to be you know an asshole and get behind the wheel you guys sounds like an
[00:18:18] old away Christmas just tell us about this complaining or whoever was telling us about the
[00:18:21] complaining of the cell you decided to sell it and asshole yeah he's a piece of shit and you know
[00:18:28] but yeah the drinking and driving in 2024 like are you fucking kidding me man we all have phones
[00:18:34] in our pocket with apps for fucking rides or you know anything whatever you have to do you don't get
[00:18:48] wait for a car in front of him to move ahead so he went into the from while I gathered when
[00:18:53] into the shoulder at a high rate of speed and didn't see them and of course so he drove into the
[00:19:00] fucking bike lane where they were doing what they normally do what riding their bikes in the bike lane
[00:19:05] as where you're supposed to be doing absolutely nothing wrong and witness is said that the
[00:19:11] rate of speed he was going that there was just no way that they were they were walking away
[00:19:16] obviously that was a tremendous rate of speed because in an average 25 mile an hour residential zone
[00:19:21] sure you get clobber pretty good but there's a good chance that they cut they could have made it yeah so
[00:19:25] I don't even know if access to cab is going but it is just disgusting it is disgusting and like I was in a
[00:19:29] car accident last week you know you guys know and it was you know we were at a red light it was
[00:19:37] turning on to Ralph 37 here in Tom's River and there was a car in front of me car behind me
[00:19:43] I mean a car in front of me and me and the light turns green he started going to make a left
[00:19:48] on to Route 37 I was right behind him the next thing I know I see lights out of my peripheral
[00:19:54] vision on my left side here bang my air bags off so this dude blew right through to stop sign
[00:20:00] doing probably 60 miles an hour ended up just destroying all three cars luckily thank goodness
[00:20:06] everybody walked away but you know as telling my son we're driving and this guy was driving home
[00:20:12] from work this guy was flying down the road on a motorcycle and my son was like you know
[00:20:17] would you ever get a bike here and I said well I would always I always thought about it you know
[00:20:20] I like riding motorcycles but in this area I never would and I went back to that accident you're on a motorcycle
[00:20:26] this guy your death for now come you know it's different outcome this guy and just because this one
[00:20:30] asshole doesn't stop at a red light and he could have ended up the same way affecting other people
[00:20:37] much more negatively you know that the accident happens a little different the guy in front of me
[00:20:41] maybe doesn't walk away maybe the guy's driving doesn't walk away maybe I don't walk away even
[00:20:45] oh I got the least of it out of the three cars but still you know it's just these assholes are
[00:20:51] out on the road I tell my kids all the time when they're driving I'm not worried about you doing

[00:22:02] people are making that poor decision when they're leaving a pop or something like that or
[00:22:06] yeah that kind of worries we have in young kids because like you said it's not you have to worry about
[00:22:11] them of course but you also have to worry about everybody else around them right and you know did
[00:22:16] to be even thinking you know maybe I shouldn't drive don't fucking do it because you know too many
[00:22:22] options and it's just a shame I you know our condolences to everybody involved and the family is

[00:26:03] Sunday yeah predict your Sunday isn't well now just for Sunday and I can't show that we have a
[00:26:08] game coming up me you should at least I know it's not a question you play Sunday we got our charges
[00:26:13] okay all right I'll give you my pick on that game to okay all right we'll discuss that but first let me take
[00:26:19] you back use your imaginations June 8th 2000 at Continental Airlines Arena it's game five
[00:26:29] of the Stanley Cup finals where our New Jersey Devils lead the Dallas stars three games to one
[00:26:35] and tuck in boys because get comfortable this is a long one not so much highlights the game
[00:26:42] itself highlights believe it or not not too many nope so um period one there were no goals uh
[00:26:48] Daring Hatcher had two minutes for hoping an 1101 Holyke at an interference at 1143 of the first
[00:26:55] amazing saves in this first period just you know brodoor and bel four were trading shots I think breadhol
[00:27:01] had an amazing opportunity on brodoor as this little two pack stack and kicked it out
[00:27:09] it was our not had a beautiful shot on and McGill only had another a really good shot on bel
[00:27:15] for you made some really nice saves so this was a gold tender period period two also no goals
[00:27:22] Peter Sukura gets a high stick in 1423 and then lightning had a high stick at 1701
[00:27:30] that's it for period two no score period three no goals friend and Mario just gets a trip at 1345
[00:27:37] now we roll into overtime is there anything that anybody wants to add on this game up until the overtime
[00:27:42] no just that fact it obviously was extremely tense anytime at 00 going that long you're pretty
[00:27:48] much thinking next one wins it so you're right in that mode for probably the second half of that game already
[00:27:53] yeah and that we don't have what's I think golf I think golf or had like four shutouts they're
[00:27:58] bleeding up to that playoff game that those those playoffs I think he was on the show yeah yeah
[00:28:03] I mean we'll go over the shot to everything um you mean both goal is just played great so um yeah
[00:28:12] overtime well first overtime nothing to write home about it was uh stifling the neutral zone play
[00:28:18] just nobody wanted to make them a stake um second overtime no goals on a neutral zone play
[00:28:27] nobody wanted to make the mistake so now we're rolling into the wee hours of the morning and
[00:28:33] overtime three at six twenty one Mike Madonna scores the winner from breadhall and Yuri
[00:28:41] Layton in to give the Dallas stars to Cole this was a to win rather this was um Madonna he just got
[00:28:49] behind the demand uh there was uh he was shrieking down the wing he cut into the middle of ice um
[00:28:55] breadhall um yeah breadhall made a really nice pasto him right in front of brodoor and um Madonna
[00:29:01] just tipped it in pasto door that's it game over um yeah anything else you want to ask yeah I
[00:29:07] studied this one a lot because I do remember the goal but I didn't remember all the my new details and
[00:29:12] I watched it a couple times and that's exactly when I came up with and then I decided to watch it a
[00:29:15] third time and I realized what happened that play that might have actually caused the goal um like you
[00:29:20] mentioned um it was holes um it was actually holes second shot attempt when he was at the right point
[00:29:27] he actually tried to shoot it in it was more of a dump if you look at it now and it literally
[00:29:31] Steven slotted with his stick the unfortunate thing was it blocked him right back to hall so now
[00:29:37] he had a second opportunity and within those couple of seconds that actually allowed Madonna to get behind
[00:29:43] the D coming down the left wing circle and score the goal the brodoor really didn't have much of a
[00:29:47] chance on the way the plan folded so if Paul had successfully dumped that puck in that play
[00:29:53] doesn't happen we don't know what happens to end that game I just thought that was pretty interesting
[00:29:58] because Steven's did everything right he stopped the initial dump in and he came with an
[00:30:02] inches of coming out of the zone and instead it bought Madonna a few seconds he needed to get back
[00:30:07] in the play we've all watched enough play off hockey to know that when it gets into second deep
[00:30:12] until over time second over time third over times or further it is just either going to be a
[00:30:18] busted play it's going to be something a beautiful goal most likely though it's not most likely
[00:30:25] it's somebody is going to make a mistake somebody else is going to capitalize and that's what happened
[00:30:29] I don't know who the demon was I think it was need or myor Malah I believe it was Malah
[00:30:34] called okay so you know just didn't pick up Madonna and Madonna got in behind him it was just
[00:30:40] a you know one mistake and that was it game over devil still lead the series three games to two
[00:30:45] now we got to go back to Dallas to try and win the cup when it was right here in Jersey all
[00:30:50] polished up and we could have raised it there and finished this thing often five so before we do that
[00:30:56] let's just close on one thing on game five and I want to say something to you about you guys
[00:31:00] are done you won't be allowed so you're fucked man now I remember what it was my fuck
[00:31:07] so I pointed this out particularly because Brodor actually looked very directed and it's completely
[00:31:12] understandable it's not the fact that you let in a goal because it's usually so super calm
[00:31:15] it's the fact that they literally could have won the Stanley Cup right there at home so if ever there was
[00:31:19] a time for Brodor to be ejected fine you can have it but I thought this particular paragraph was
[00:31:24] a good timing for the goal we have in Brodor what happened in that game five that seemed to go on forever
[00:31:30] it's simply called the Martandro Dork Calm and it says club the news shortlist of top
[00:31:35] always in NHL history he has Patrick Watt number one and Brodor number two that's how I rated
[00:31:42] so far let me you said when Marty retires it might be a different story I never gone back to see
[00:31:47] if he actually did change his tune because as we know Marty retired with all the all the
[00:31:50] records so I wonder what club would say now he goes on to say the one thing I loved about Marty what
[00:31:56] most guys loved about Marty is how calm he is on game days take it from me go always can be
[00:32:02] had cases the mornings they have big games but Marty never seemed nervous if Marty's not dressed you
[00:32:09] wouldn't know whether he was playing or not that's impressive and that's what we saw for 18 years
[00:32:15] with this guy right I mean not just a big game mentality but just being able to shake off bad goals
[00:32:23] and just get ready he never snowballed into like what we saw last year like we let one in and then we
[00:32:30] had five in and Rodor never did that and we'll talk about it in 2003 but there was a very very bad goal
[00:32:37] in that Stanley Cup final series two that would have maybe taken a lot of goals out of that game
[00:32:42] forget which game it was but he recovered it was a huge club this plane to buck we'll get to it
[00:32:47] when we sorry analyzing 2003 I think Tony had something to say but we're running out of time so we're
[00:32:51] going to move on you know you know what you guys talk about Rodor and it's definitely basically
[00:32:57] what my point was going to be is if you look at those old games the goal-tending battles back
[00:33:01] them from those years even if you look at like the Johnson bastions you get as the Patrick
[00:33:05] Waz the hasics you know the Marty's the go the battles even in a place where always so awesome
[00:33:11] and that's one thing I think that if you guys notice I think we'd lack the last 20 years as you
[00:33:16] don't see those two goalie yeah one goal of that dominate the game but those games used to be the
[00:33:20] what I know people would like everyone wants to score and they make their change all these rules
[00:33:24] to make more scoring but I have to be honest men I love some of those one nothing two to one
[00:33:28] goal battles and such epic like the fact that we remember now I don't know if I remember exactly
[00:33:35] who played each other in goals certain games but you remember the brodoor hasic games you remember
[00:33:39] those because it was such a thing back then and that's one thing you bring up this game and
[00:33:43] we had that with Belphore like I said I had to count like four shutouts till that game so game five
[00:33:48] it was just it was it seemed like a different kind of hockey in goal-tending wise because I love
[00:33:53] you know you're you're you're definitely right to and Dan has talked about this a lot being
[00:33:58] our resident goalie that you know the goal-tending nowadays there's a there's a template and it's
[00:34:05] you have to look at certain way you have to be certain size you have to all that stuff so they
[00:34:09] are very cookie cutter where you have your top you know five six goals in the league and then
[00:34:15] everybody else is just kind of mixed up together and you can kind of swap them all out wasn't
[00:34:21] like that back then and every goalie you faced had a different style especially in that sense
[00:34:28] you know the events and yeah you had guys like Hashtag who just were flopping all over to
[00:34:34] play is doing whatever they can to make the save you know positionally you had like brodoor who was
[00:34:40] that hybrid stand-up butterfly you had wahoo was probably the last of the you know more traditional
[00:34:47] stand-up guys and then you had you know guys like Kujo who were strict butterfly and guys like
[00:34:52] urbe so everybody would play it a little different nowadays it does seem like everybody's kind of
[00:34:58] the same and you're right like when you had brodoor versus Hashtag and we were playing buffalo
[00:35:05] didn't matter where anybody was in the standings you tuned into that game because you knew
[00:35:09] you had two of the best goals going against each other and it's it's Vasilesky and Shostarkin and
[00:35:15] you know how about there are a few of them now but nowhere near what they were and the
[00:35:20] personalities were shown a lot more back then like I kind of feel like they're all just there
[00:35:27] like we had guys like brosso we had you know Kenraget guys that I mean you didn't think of
[00:35:32] their names yeah like these nons you don't think of sometimes but if you think back like there was
[00:35:36] personalities well what was it all what's it all Trevor kid yeah you had you know guys like that
[00:35:43] and even the bad teams had like goal is that yeah you kind of liked you know because they were
[00:35:48] decent goal is I remember when San Jose if we talked about Irbe when San Jose and Ottawa first came out
[00:35:54] those goals were thrown from the fire you think of like the Peter Siddorco which is in the
[00:35:57] Irbe but you still knew who they were for some reason right you're right and so game five did
[00:36:04] end up with the devils having 48 shots on any bell for 48 shots and 48 saves I mean he had a
[00:36:14] and you know the only reason why they were able to get back to Dallas was Bell 4
[00:36:19] yeah there are two like main guys between him and Madonna Madonna started heating up the last
[00:36:23] year before and then in this game and then you know Bell 4 yeah that was main guys started to come to play
[00:36:30] and although we were stopped for one now it's 3 2 you're getting a little tight in a throat for sure
[00:36:35] Broteur had 40 saves on 41 shots who was a great night for him power plays Dallas was
[00:36:42] for 2 jersey was 0 for 3 Dallas had 26 hits in that game New Jersey had 62
[00:36:50] or face off Dallas 163.1% and we won 36.9.
[00:36:56] 164 games against 60 hits now I know that I know he's half a season essentially took two games
[00:37:02] because we were in the third overtime by that point but still a ton more hits that was the one
[00:37:08] thing that the devils definitely didn't lack in physicality back now so let's hope that
[00:37:14] Steven's control on that ice like a shark you just even though it looked back it's just you
[00:37:18] uh oh just was awesome well I loved them I loved them all right um now we go to game six
[00:37:25] now we're at reunion arena in Dallas Texas it's June 10th 2000 the first period of this game
[00:37:32] started like the rest of the game five no goals um Danico took a slashing penalty at 446
[00:37:41] Joe Sim took a penalty at 6.54 for elbowing and Danico that's on the score sheet again two minutes
[00:37:47] for eye sticking at 1345 again Bel 4 embrador were amazing in this first period
[00:37:54] roll into the second at 3.30 refalcety took two minutes for holding
[00:37:59] and finally the devils broke through on Bel 4 at 5.18 of the second period when Scott
[00:38:05] Neetermire scored a short handed goal his fit to the playoffs from Lemue and Jake Pandolfo
[00:38:12] this was uh Marty played the puck behind the net he couldn't throw it up into the you know
[00:38:18] round the bottom of the blue line in his zone Melakov missed played the puck so he kind of
[00:38:25] flooded a little bit and it gets to Pandolfo who got control in the neutral zone kind of touch
[00:38:31] pass to Lemue who hits it up to uh Neetermire who was in all alone and um he just crashed in that
[00:38:40] him and Lemue both crashed in that uh Danetermire was um first to it and he put it pass Bel 4 for one
[00:38:47] not the New Jersey anything you want to add on that go above. Yeah just uh the the works for
[00:38:53] Lemue there because again Claude Lemue was our playoff hero in 95 brought him back in for 2000
[00:38:57] which obviously worked he didn't have quite the offensive output that he did in 95 but his stamp was all
[00:39:03] over um this Stanley Cup and particular in this game because um when Rodor played that puck low like
[00:39:09] he said it kind of got chipped out of his own but that wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Claude Lemue
[00:39:13] who completely tied up Coltay at the time which you couldn't probably do now but back then it was
[00:39:18] legally completely tied him up and that's what got the puck up the porch to start to 3 on one
[00:39:22] but more importantly Lemue had it in him to get back into that play and Claude over the
[00:39:27] blue line like you said he was right there with Neetermire he actually had the last pass to Deetermire
[00:39:31] was a real quick two quick passes till it got to Neetermire but Lemue was right there jumping
[00:39:36] up the play and for how he was tied up and how he started all the way back in the defensive end
[00:39:42] you know Coltay was just forgetting back up there as quick as he did that's not necessarily
[00:39:45] his speed game you know what I mean that was just his instinct and his drive to win so as much as
[00:39:50] as he was a beauty by Neetermire was absolutely beautiful goal I credit that to Lemue that's
[00:39:55] nice of Lemue to type situation right there I'm with you on that one but wasn't this the same play
[00:39:59] that Sadoran I heard it right so Sadoran gets her oh Sadoran oh Sadoran because there's a lot
[00:40:08] of events that with that you would test the door and you think what you're mentioning Sadoran
[00:40:11] this all because Neuer and Dite gets hurt I think Sadoran got hurt on the first call and he was in
[00:40:15] part of the net lay in there because I think Neuer Dite was next right because I think this is what
[00:40:21] leads up to what you're going to talk about Chris eventually here with Sadoran because I think
[00:40:24] because it was all building from all these injuries that were going on in the middle of the
[00:40:27] day go down in front of Arnet or his net in front of Arnet. In front of Arnet? In front of Arnet?
[00:40:31] In front of Arnet. In front of Arnet? I remember correctly yeah.
[00:40:32] I don't remember that I know what will I forgot to actually bring up in the first period
[00:40:36] this support hit you know so we actually we should talk about that real quick before we move any further
[00:40:42] I'm not sure about Sadoran I got a one on the video number. Yeah.
[00:40:46] He did get hurt because that's why I had to remember correctly I don't remember
[00:40:50] too much about 100% about it but I remember that had to win after Sacora because of what happened
[00:40:55] to Neuer Dite and Sadoran that came I believe. Well because Sacora goes down in the first
[00:41:00] he only played three minutes and 16 seconds so you assume at what six seven shifts
[00:41:06] maybe depending on the length of shifts so he was out there you know played a lot of the first
[00:41:10] maybe five six shifts whatever it was and takes the headshot from Daring Hatcher. This looked back
[00:41:17] you know this is our A line this is you know one third of it that Peter Sacora is just you
[00:41:23] know anybody that is a devil fan knows Peter Sacora he's down stretched off the ice I mean
[00:41:29] this look bad. Oh you already know he's not only dumped for this game if there's a game 7 he's done
[00:41:34] at this point yeah we don't have any line anymore they took them to the hospital now he's get so
[00:41:38] he's not even just not on the bench not in the locker room he is in a Dallas hospital.
[00:41:45] This was certainly concerned for his health at this point it was that brutal. So this was so now
[00:41:49] we had I think Lumia was playing a lot up there with in his spot and McGillney was moved up a
[00:41:56] lot and who for quite a few of those shifts with Arna and Elie Ash but thank God Arna and Elie Ash
[00:42:03] weren't or Elie Ash weren't the ones that got heard on that one because as you can see
[00:42:07] moving forward so Peter Sacora is out and then he like he said Sador was out.
[00:42:12] No one died got heard in that game too. No one died can I just yeah it's all from the same
[00:42:16] that's where that's the core is. Okay. So now we're early in the game then because like you said
[00:42:22] the first goal on Sador was down because when he scored that first goal at Liv Sador was down
[00:42:26] to the core I got laid out in the first period and he only played three minutes so whatever we did
[00:42:30] to them was even earlier in the first period of my life. And I think new and Dijk was hurt it's like
[00:42:34] had it's been so long ago by the new and Dijk was hurt right in the beginning also because that
[00:42:38] game was very chippy because there was you know Arna number 27 of course was even getting into
[00:42:42] it with letting it in that game. It was just it was a very tense game and like I said I believe
[00:42:48] it all time tables out. Well thank you about it that was obviously had to win their back home
[00:42:52] they had just won every single shift literally is magnified so yeah I got chippy as hell.
[00:42:58] And then less than a minute after Nina Myers scores the first goal the game a little over a
[00:43:04] second my keen gets his second in the playoffs from Scott Thorin and Mike Madonna.
[00:43:11] Thorin he just gets it over to keen at top of the circle and just fires a wrist shot
[00:43:15] gloves side high over to Brodor 1-1 I mean bad goal Bob what do you say?
[00:43:23] Yeah I watched it a lot and everything was a totally clean break up left when wall he did send it
[00:43:27] over to the right wing top of the circle but Brodor had clear sight it just went over as glove I mean
[00:43:33] it's gonna happen and you're not gonna save them all but I bet you if you asked Brodor that
[00:43:38] would be one he won't back. Yeah so now we uh that's the scoring for the first
[00:43:43] second period hatcher and Steven's both their coincidental miners for rubbing at 1348
[00:43:48] Thorin and Commonwealth also got coincidental roughing miners at 1921 we roll into the third
[00:43:56] no goals no penalties and then we get into the first over time so now we just came off a
[00:44:03] overtime game we just traveled to the other side of the country and two days later are now in
[00:44:10] a another overtime game so the first overtime the only thing I've noticed is 1843 are not gets two
[00:44:18] minutes for cross-checking and then we go to the second overtime so now this is it I mean it's now
[00:44:25] biting time this is you know next fully there wins it or send the wins the cup or sense it
[00:44:31] games seven and then before before you go on I just like to remind the audience we brought up a
[00:44:37] couple times that we know where we were for certain games Chris I know we're a captain hooks
[00:44:41] you know having some beers in our younger selves and now the overtime is an interesting situation
[00:44:46] for people who've been at a bar for three four hours watching their playoff. There's no commercial
[00:44:51] breaks you know overtime and the Stanley cups on a line so you are just greeted out man and then
[00:44:58] an intermission happens now you're on a 20 minute bathroom line just to barely make it back
[00:45:03] out in time for the next intermission by the time you're done feeling like you got to be again that's
[00:45:06] how much so funny right you can't go anywhere because you can't miss this. Now you're 100% right
[00:45:13] but unfortunately this happened 24 years ago and of course audio and video back then are nowhere
[00:45:20] near what they are now so this is the call from Bill Clement I hope that it comes through enough
[00:45:28] that you know people can make it out so go.
[00:45:32] the points Steven step up the whole thing and that was Jason or not from Patrick
[00:46:15] goal and it was what a fucking thing of beauty we talked about this goal a lot on other shows
[00:46:22] I've been the one to say that I believe that Elias's past was more impressive than
[00:46:26] or not shot I know it's a game winning Stanley Cup goal I get it but the way this plan folded Steven
[00:46:32] was actually started on the right point for the face off got thrown back to hand me through it into
[00:46:36] the zone when everything happened over on the left side and the puck was about to be cleared
[00:46:40] it was Steven's a game all the way over to the left point captain his own dumped in the corner
[00:46:45] to Elias with a completely blunt this is just being in sync with Arnaut he's not looking
[00:46:49] throws it through the middle through everybody wide open that uh another one I bring this
[00:46:54] because like Steven's had to stamp all over this you look at a secondary assist and a dump
[00:46:58] in the corner and you think that nothing to do with it without Steven's play doesn't even happen
[00:47:02] and then Elias put the masterful pass wonderful game winning goal everybody's sereness course
[00:47:08] jersey just like comic imagery it's wise my favorite Stanley Cup and to I did a little
[00:47:14] investigation while we were talking to last few minutes so yes he was talking about Sakura
[00:47:18] getting this jersey bought out there at 1640 was the first injury of the first 20 seconds later
[00:47:24] was new and dyke so that's why it all I done okay I just double checked a little bit yeah so okay
[00:47:28] this the first one first couple minutes of the game this is all happened it's pretty crazy
[00:47:32] and you know for people that maybe haven't watched the celebration I highly recommend watching
[00:47:39] the celebration because it it Larry Robinson who we talked about how we got here shows ago
[00:47:45] right eight games left in the in the season he becomes the head coach and now he just wins a
[00:47:51] Stanley Cup Peter Sakura is out we don't know the the severity of the injury and Larry Robinson
[00:47:57] throws Peter Sakura's jersey on on the ice door in the celebration because he couldn't be there
[00:48:04] and it was just one of the coolest things that you've ever seen in sport and Scott Stevens goes on
[00:48:10] to win the con. Smith and what else do you guys want to touch on with that 2000 before we move on
[00:48:17] hard work and team yeah you know it was a heck of a team I loved it and again it was it was the start of
[00:48:25] trying to educate other fans to know of it that this wasn't offensive team this was the prelude to 2001
[00:48:32] where they were the number one offensive team I think Chris we went through is there were like
[00:48:36] bit or six or something in the league this year which is still great for Devil's team all the way
[00:48:40] to 2001 where they led the league and of course we lost in game seven there just a cleanup one
[00:48:45] thing that we've talked about before again this is from the book we mentioned the fact that we used
[00:48:50] have parking lot parades and how we actually thought it was pretty cool it's actually mentioned
[00:48:54] in the book here and it does say that after the first two Stanley Cups the team held parades in the
[00:48:59] parking lot of the metal lands the team supporters to quite a beating from New York Rangers and New York
[00:49:04] Islander fans all of whom had a good laugh over a group of players parading on asphalt the parking lot
[00:49:11] thing that went on was great one long time season ticket holder said I think it's better than any parade
[00:49:16] could be it's echoes what we've said it started in the morning this player said this fan said
[00:49:24] regular people got there and tailgated you party from lunchtime until 10 o'clock at night
[00:49:30] went on and on they had a stage and you met all the players I think that's much better than going
[00:49:36] down Broadway even if they dropped ticket tape it's over as soon as they passed that's just one
[00:49:42] guy's account of it who was there we were there I felt the same way I totally agree 2000 and 2003
[00:49:48] we were there and it's a fiber there too I bought my ripped the octopus t-shirt oh yeah you're right
[00:49:55] you're right so all three we were there it was just you know like you said there were there was food
[00:49:59] there was music there was a stage set up you were walking around talking to other devil fan
[00:50:05] celebrating with everybody you sitting a parade you're standing there he's right and you watch
[00:50:10] the parade go by and then that's it you go home like this was an all-day event it was much
[00:50:15] much more however I'm really looking forward to having the parade next year so I can truly compare
[00:50:19] the two okay fair enough anything you want to add tone before we get into our next little segment here
[00:50:26] well I was going to talk about it couple minutes ago but like our team we talked about sickour again
[00:50:32] with a jersey on the ice a stop and that's one thing about that team is that team had each other's back
[00:50:36] like you always felt that that whole season I think that's what we're missing last year
[00:50:40] I mean I mean we didn't have the tools to have each other's back last year really
[00:50:43] but I noticed that like when I remember that season you know there was a team even maybe even more
[00:50:50] than 95 they had it really had each others like you saw that throughout the game one guy got hit
[00:50:55] everybody was there to protect them you know I don't not just want to remember when we talking
[00:51:00] about it right a lot of flashbacks I haven't thought of this game in a while and you bring it off
[00:51:04] it's coming off things I remember and those are elements of hockey that have never changed
[00:51:08] they've always been that way and you have to play that way to be a complete team and know we
[00:51:13] lacked that so much last year but the personnel that fits is brought in this season should change
[00:51:21] that I expect this team to be a heck of a lot more physical so this I mean this we talked about
[00:51:28] tone on the last show like this devil team if they can be what we think they can be what they
[00:51:36] are on paper already this team can be an absolute juggernaut to deal with I don't know they're
[00:51:42] going to they're going to win a lot of freaking hockey games it's going to be fun.
[00:51:47] I worry about a little bit with them and not not thought for the whole season just I've noticed
[00:51:50] that like if like a lot of teams that do these global games that travel so far when they get back
[00:51:56] there's always a little bit of a little hiccup so I hope we see that but I think through the
[00:52:00] long run yeah man we have we addressed couple with the two big things that we need to address
[00:52:05] goal 10 thing which taught I mean with Allen you know and Mark Trum I mean right there I'm
[00:52:11] happy with our goal 10 thing and we stepped up the defense a lot and I think that was that could
[00:52:16] have that may even been bigger than the goal 10 thing. Oh I agree I agree and then we'll who
[00:52:22] run into the bottom six I mean those guys Nate Nason caught her like that's just going to be
[00:52:27] so much just keep all these on appropriate pieces right well actually like I said I ran into
[00:52:32] Johnny yesterday we're hanging out the pool and you know we're talking about getting ready to
[00:52:36] drive up there for opening day and he's like you really think we're going to be like pretty good
[00:52:41] oh my dude have you listened to the podcast at all honestly not this summer I'm like go listen to it
[00:52:48] we're going to want to shit load a game and we're going to tell you why we dissect each player each
[00:52:53] move I'm like come on listen to it dude you should be hype you should be super hype this is not
[00:52:57] gonna be last year this is something that's not it's not so to kind of tie in and put a big
[00:53:04] old bow on 2000 the older devil teams uh Puckson pitch for it's Jennifer Strider put an article out
[00:53:11] it's five New Jersey devil players who were better than you remember awesome and I didn't go through
[00:53:18] these guys but I'm assuming that they're probably dudes that we have seen a lot of so she wrote
[00:53:23] on October 4th the New Jersey devil's a face to Buffalo Sabers in Prague some players will step up
[00:53:28] to make this season successful but as we learned in previous years it's more than just the stars
[00:53:34] who were some of those players who executed their roles to perfection she has number five
[00:53:39] japan d'alpho good current head coach of the Boston University men's ice hockey team japan d'alpho
[00:53:45] was drafted by the devils as the 30 second overall pick in 93 he won two Stanley Cups one in 2000
[00:53:52] and 2003 following the conclusion of the O607 season he became a Frank selfie trophy with finalist
[00:53:59] although he was ultimately placed on waivers and had his contract bought out
[00:54:03] and his mark in his career we talked about japan d'alpho a lot on this show like he was
[00:54:12] a stalwart on those teams and we watched every single night and number 20 was just one of the
[00:54:17] best defensive forwards out there not the best skater maybe not the best offensive guy even though
[00:54:26] I know he was when he was in college but man the role that he was asked to play and that he just
[00:54:34] without complaining without thinking he deserved more just did it he did it as good as anybody in the
[00:54:40] league japan d'alpho's fucking stud wasn't I will admit though was not a huge fan of him
[00:54:46] while he was playing at the time he was one of those guys that I was constantly I don't think I
[00:54:53] gave him the credit that I give him now looking back when he played it was like to me it was you know
[00:55:03] just was riding this coatails but that so wasn't the case and now he had for a while they're also
[00:55:09] done it kind of as I've known he would be the predominant penalty killer now we did talk we had to
[00:55:14] show maybe last month and we were going over 10 best devils of all time and we had our own
[00:55:20] kind of ad lips to it and again I didn't really do the exercise properly because talent-wise and
[00:55:25] all that japan d'alpho's not one of the 10 best devils of all times but at that time I put them in
[00:55:30] because my theory was more like you know 10 devils that really helped push the devils to where they are
[00:55:36] overall and I just really felt that j was very responsible for helping win a couple of those cups
[00:55:42] and everything else he'd done for the team overall in that role and like you said this guy was
[00:55:47] a legitimate score through college came here at the change role you'd see his hands every now and then
[00:55:51] right if you had to put up on a way you'd be like wow this guy can still do it when he has to but
[00:55:55] total professional did everything it asked double in a in a tough role and what is perceived
[00:56:00] as kind of a boring role you know maybe that guy's just kind of filling in the NHL he wasn't he was a
[00:56:05] master what he did and he deserves a recognition yeah the devils don't win two standly cups if
[00:56:10] he's not on the team so he was integral in both those cups thoughts on pando tone I was always a
[00:56:17] pando fan I mean I like him you know I thought obviously he's something with him and madden on
[00:56:22] just was a killer player and I think he's one of those guys you know Bobby talks about like the
[00:56:27] most talented players maybe or sometimes we talked about this a couple weeks ago sometimes it's
[00:56:33] not certain players fit on a certain team a certain way look at when he talked about Clarkson right
[00:56:37] he leaves diggers he big nightmare goes to Toronto but what he was with the devils he was a great
[00:56:42] player for the devils and then there's certain guys that just fit the team perfectly you know
[00:56:47] and I thought he was one of them yeah pandos definitely there number four Andy Green
[00:56:54] right to Michigan native played all but three seasons with the devils across a 16 year playing career
[00:56:59] he originally went to the devils as an undrafted free agent many now categorized him is having
[00:57:04] a low offensive output and a lack of physical play which has kept him out of the spotlight as
[00:57:09] a top end defenseman but he was an excellent player and leader of this team for well over a decade
[00:57:14] this is backed up by the fact that green set NHL record seat career highs in assists 31 points
[00:57:20] 37 during the oh nine and 2010 season he was also a devils captain during his prime and
[00:57:26] helped New Jersey reach to 2012 Stanley Cup final yeah I mean Andy Green was fantastic and I
[00:57:33] think we've talked about these guys like him and Henry can Zay Jack and these guys that are like
[00:57:39] going to be forgotten devils but yet they were great devils just because of the empty
[00:57:44] inships you know but they were fantastic devils and he agreed to guy that maybe in the 90s
[00:57:50] would never have left the devils you know it's a different kind of hobby than you kind of adopted
[00:57:53] your player and you know it's with every school but you kind of kept them right and I know people
[00:57:58] kind of when Andy Green did leave there was a lot of fan base that was happy that he was leaving
[00:58:03] but I don't know what you guys think but I think he's someone of that they would have kept on
[00:58:07] to probably force whole career back in the day you know now obviously the youth has moved in
[00:58:12] of a player's plays after the 30s it's kind of surprising sometimes you know to me Andy Green is
[00:58:18] to kind of guy that you know playing in the 2000s if you threw him on the devils of 95 or any
[00:58:24] of those early teams he would have been just as successful he fit that role he was kind of a throw back
[00:58:30] and just a really really good defenseman he was he was super steady and everything he did I think
[00:58:35] one of the problems that people have with him is from an offensive side he did kind of come in
[00:58:40] think and he was going to be the next Rafalsky and maybe he didn't quite live up to his offensive
[00:58:44] side but he wasn't a slouch either I mean definitely he definitely puts him in and he led the
[00:58:48] theme but he was in a really hard time for this franchise too because after the Stanley Cups
[00:58:52] and it was where we were still decent enough to make the playoffs we weren't really going anywhere until
[00:58:57] that Ron in 2012 I guess just what she met all right that we've said a bunch of times that's a tough
[00:59:01] time to be part of this franchise and then ultimately to really kind of start to see the decline
[00:59:06] that took us quite a while to get out of but yeah hell of a player captain I always wondered
[00:59:11] that when he was captain I didn't and then follow him as captain like we did Steven you know
[00:59:15] I wasn't sure that he was that we talked about that a lot like what is a captain material we
[00:59:19] talked about he's your two years ago and now we totally love the way he's a captain just in the
[00:59:23] beginning we're like I don't know is he the right kind of voice and he grows into it so I was
[00:59:28] happy to look at the roster then too at those time here when he was captain yeah oh yeah absolutely
[00:59:33] yeah I wonder if Clarkson's on this list tone you mentioned him uh number three is Stefan Rieche
[00:59:40] you know she writes aside from returning for his final season in the NHL in 2001 2002 unlike some
[00:59:47] of the others on this list this player only spent five seasons with the devils step on Rieche was
[00:59:52] known for his size speed and hard shot with a quick release all of which put him among the most
[00:59:56] dangerous scores in the league during the late 80s and early 90s the French Canadian right wing
[01:00:02] originally played for Montreal Canadians he was traded to the devils and made an immediate impact
[01:00:07] although not properly recognized until much later in his career he scored 64 points in his debut
[01:00:13] season in New Jersey and then had two consecutive seasons scoring over 70 points where his underrated
[01:00:19] comes from his less than ideal performance in the 95-96 season and being overshadowed by other
[01:00:26] players on the roster back then Rieche concluded his time in the league with over 350 points
[01:00:32] and over 900 games played I have a Rieche store yeah so I've never shared on the show but Bobby
[01:00:39] go first uh oh I don't really have too much to add to Rieche I've brought up a few times how
[01:00:44] he actually had the most points in that 95 run uh Lemue gets all the credit and that's fine but
[01:00:49] people like literally it seems like you forget about Rieche and then when you talk about his other
[01:00:53] regular season success the Quentin put up on the types of teams that the devils had like you
[01:00:57] almost don't think about this guy some glad he made the list he was one of R key offensive players for
[01:01:03] a long time I don't even remember that 95-96 was such a bad offensive regular season for him because
[01:01:08] all I remember about 95-96 was just a train record that didn't make the playoffs in general I
[01:01:12] hold the whole team accountable you know but um he was one of our top guys for several years
[01:01:18] huh what's your Rieche story yeah well first of all Steph on her Shay I think without Steph
[01:01:23] on her Shay and 90 we'd ought to know if we win that cup I mean he was a big player on that team
[01:01:28] and my Steph on her Shay story is actually pretty cool me and my sister my sister was a huge
[01:01:32] for Shay fan so we went down the devils were doing a practice right over in Tampa um they used to
[01:01:38] stay at this hotel over by the water over there and so it's me and my sister's earning my van at that
[01:01:44] time period because my van breaks down outside the hotel where the devils are staying so it starts
[01:01:48] raining and yeah so I know that we're actually part of that area you know so my sister wants
[01:01:53] to build devils players are walking in and stuff it's getting late I were totally broken down
[01:01:57] and Steph on her Shay is walking up my sister just runs off to me and he knows blah blah blah
[01:02:02] a big fan Steph on her Shay bought me and my sister inside that hotel let us sit in the lobby with
[01:02:06] him until someone came to get us and he was just sat there and talk off he with us talked about
[01:02:11] the devils wow was yeah it was we play and watch him dice I want you all I believe you back
[01:02:17] yeah I think you went back over there and you became a lightning eventually remember you know
[01:02:21] I don't yeah my sister got a stick from him actually when he played with the lightning
[01:02:26] we have in that back at the house and he was like the one of the nicest guys man the fact that he
[01:02:31] felt like actually like he's like listen coming to hotel you know and of course and our
[01:02:36] minds are like holy shit and that would go on and stuff on his head that's awesome
[01:02:40] talk and he's just been like a decent human nice people that need help right how cool is that nice guy
[01:02:47] that's a good story Tom so number two is I'm gonna take a little umbring umbridge for number two
[01:02:54] only because the title of the article are devil players that you kind of forgot how good they were
[01:03:00] number two gets so much love on this podcast so I don't put him in the category number two
[01:03:08] Randy Baked. Awesome a good call tone help along with my Bobby Holique and Mike Paluso Mckay stood
[01:03:15] 6200 and 10 pounds and was a member of the crash line which was formed by the then-head
[01:03:20] coach's off-limair in order to compete against the larger player in the easy players in the
[01:03:24] eastern conference of the 1980s with this trio of players Mckay was instrumental in helping the
[01:03:30] devils take down the Detroit Red wings in 95 Mckay was also a member of the devils when they
[01:03:35] uncovered it couple again in 2000 against the stars and six games despite not starting or ending
[01:03:41] his career with the devils both Mckay himself and his physicality were seriously underrated to
[01:03:47] he finished his time in the NHL with 932 games played 162 volts 29 of which were winners
[01:03:54] and 201 assists look we've talked Randy Mckay all the time on this show I don't know how much more
[01:04:01] we have to go into one of our all-time favorite players yeah and this was my first
[01:04:09] favorite player I mean I'm an adult it's not like a kid growing up where I like these
[01:04:13] are my heroes it was just legit in the favorite player because of the way he plays
[01:04:17] Randy Mckay just one of those guys were it's like you know you may beat me but you're
[01:04:22] never gonna outwork me and that's just the type of players I love which most of my favorite
[01:04:25] players account of those guys in the middle they're like of course I love jack-use and
[01:04:29] really awesome Rodor and Steven's and stuff but when you're gonna get down to roll and like
[01:04:33] really fill it out hockey teams so those are really the guys I love to watch play and Randy Mckay was
[01:04:38] actually perfect for this team at the perfect time so where my Randy Mckay jersey the games so
[01:04:44] you know he's one guy that never him and guys like him, Paluso brought in even I know I think
[01:04:49] rotten wasn't very happy which one the devils Neil Neil is a bad contract yeah not an
[01:04:55] Neil yeah there was of there was a problem with that but those kind of guys like they were
[01:04:59] those keys you know we always talk about that dude on that team that may not get the recognition
[01:05:03] but without that guy you don't think they would win the what the pieces of those teams back then
[01:05:07] and I think guys like Mckay and Rodor were doing that players like that. So it's number one another
[01:05:13] guy that gets a lot of love from the Uncle Puckers um sir Gabriel number one the starge
[01:05:20] all right I like the construction of this list where you much yeah a versatile physical and defensive
[01:05:25] forward capable playing all three forward positions Sergei Brillan is one of only five devils who
[01:05:30] played for all three Stanley Cups he played 765 games earned 308 points including 179 assists
[01:05:38] and 129 goals the left-handed Moscow native played his entire 13 year NHL career with the New Jersey
[01:05:46] and was honored with the second ever devils ring of honor Brillan went on to join the devil's
[01:05:50] coaching staff as an assistant coach in 22 after serving as an assistant an associate coach for
[01:05:56] various devils age. I'll fill it his dedication to both the NHL and the entire devil's franchise
[01:06:02] is unquestioned it is safe to say that it's a fact both his loyalty and his skills should have
[01:06:08] been more appreciated during his time on the ice so yeah serge again one of our favorites we talk
[01:06:14] about him constantly he was the first ever devil you know on the Uncle Puckers which maybe if
[01:06:20] Dan decides to come back on this oh we can start that again I don't know how to play
[01:06:25] even though it's Trinity is nothing so you know yeah the next week Dan will be back in the
[01:06:30] normal we should be able to get going with all four of us again but dude serge was a absolute corner
[01:06:36] stone on every one of those cup teams so he was just to do we've said it a million times
[01:06:42] and she wrote it there didn't matter where you put him you want him to kill penalties he'll
[01:06:46] kill penalties wanted to be on the power play he'll be a force on the power play you want to play
[01:06:51] in the top six bottom six didn't matter he could have played goalie at that point you know just
[01:06:55] didn't matter Sergei Brillan was a jack of all trades and not many guys in the NHL nowadays
[01:07:01] are like that his specialty was whatever to hell you need in them to do and I love serge
[01:07:09] and I believe that his name should be up there how does some people might not agree with Dan
[01:07:13] to go Steven's L.A. Osmido Marabro door up in the rafters I think when you win three cups of
[01:07:18] the team you could put your number up there so that's what I was going to ask you guys now
[01:07:22] in retrospect that we have this kind of wall of honor right and he was the first player to be on
[01:07:27] which is kind of like award number two right it was quite the banner but it was this
[01:07:32] that you still think that's the right move so obviously Tony obviously does not crisp you honestly believe
[01:07:37] he belongs in a rafters as well well I mean I see both sides of it like I think it's too late
[01:07:44] to put him to the rafters because you already put him in the ring of honor yeah you said the
[01:07:47] precedent now that is another level that players can aspire to sure what Tony's right he you know
[01:07:53] when you win three Stanley cups with the same team and you know just because he's not brodoer
[01:08:00] need a higher than I go or Stevens but he still has been as important as those guys they don't
[01:08:08] win all three of those cups without brillin the same they don't win all three would have
[01:08:14] only look at his dimensions so there's a case to be made but I like the fact that there's a ring
[01:08:20] of honor and your rafters jersey up in the rafters I like that there's two tears like you
[01:08:27] just three Stanley cup rings I know like the hall of fame right the NHL hall of fame even
[01:08:33] any hall of fame right like the it's nowhere near as difficult to get into it as you know
[01:08:43] yeah McGill and the LA I'm saying that they do put guys in where maybe 20 30 years ago you're like
[01:08:49] I don't know what they would have gotten in so I kind of like having the two tears because
[01:08:53] you say you make that jersey going to the rafters so important little more than just yeah
[01:09:01] the tighter to get into but here's a question for you guys say that and now say the names
[01:09:06] that are on our rafters right now Stevens need her mire brodoer and dannico iliash and elli
[01:09:13] dead so do you think i love candanta go and I mean and i'm glad his names up there I think it should be
[01:09:20] up there but are you gonna tell me are you gonna tell me as a talent level that
[01:09:27] brilliant shouldn't be up there this is where I see where you're coming from because the other four
[01:09:32] guys you can on their physical career alone you can show how they belong up there Stevens
[01:09:38] a little less but he purposely change a very good offensive game to be called the best controlling
[01:09:44] guy on the on the ice dannico is a little more of a case of long time forever devil three Stanley
[01:09:52] cup and when you look at that was he 17 years or 20 17 or 18 and he was 13 and three so it wasn't
[01:09:58] just three cups in here for five years it was the entire career and that means something to me too
[01:10:03] I'm pretty but it's not based on the best player and I'm glad that I said dannico i love candanta
[01:10:10] come so glad he's up there I just think real in belongs up there that's what I'm saying
[01:10:13] I kind of my both kind of goes that way too you know you can kind of look at it this way right like
[01:10:18] Stevens raster you know number four is in the rafters he's in the hall of fame number 30's in
[01:10:23] the rafters brodoers in the hall of fame number 27's in the rafters he's in the hall of fame
[01:10:28] number 26 is in the rafters and people are talking constantly about L.A.h. being in the hall of fame
[01:10:34] right there is not the rafters and nobody's talking about candanta go ever being in the hall of fame
[01:10:40] so I think you'll never get a call that you're I think your argument makes sense to either say
[01:10:48] maybe dannico should be in the ring of honor but I think more so brod
[01:10:52] L.A. I mean a breeland should maybe if you're gonna go buy that dynamic should be up in the rafters
[01:10:57] again I kind of like the two tiers I do like you like that kind of separation factor too but also
[01:11:03] there's the thing like you're looking at a body of work now right and it's the three cups is all we're
[01:11:08] comparing to fast forward 15 20 years you know do we have five cups now as you know as a team
[01:11:15] and which players got multiple like if we got two was jack-use here for both or was he only here for one
[01:11:21] was Tim O'Mire here for both there but he's your got straighted like who knows so there's another level
[01:11:25] retrospect you might be able to look at 15 20 years for now and be like okay this is really proving
[01:11:30] to be something extraordinary and maybe you can't escalate them off the wall up to the rafters if
[01:11:35] you do you know in hindsight go nobody else is gonna do what he did it is a different right now
[01:11:41] players move faster who knows and loop on the tiers yeah I like the tiers too I think there's
[01:11:47] definitely an argument that breeland could be up in the rafters but at the same time I kind of like
[01:11:52] you know who else do you add to the you know that's a whole different conversation we got to
[01:11:56] talk about certain guys that might be bringing a boner guys because we don't have anybody
[01:12:01] over the last 30 years that should be in the rafters you know I think there's some guys on this
[01:12:07] team that can be eventually but yeah you can bring a boner guys I'll give you a scenario unless
[01:12:13] cups were one and let's say Parisi had stayed and had a normal career prediction where he was
[01:12:18] peaking for maybe a little bit longer than kind of slide it down and maybe it was leading the
[01:12:22] team and points that would be a wall like I don't think that would be a banner you know I mean even
[01:12:28] if you're a little bit more air from us so he but right now I don't even know who the next guy in
[01:12:31] the wall would be and might actually some guys I really liked I don't know I think he left two
[01:12:36] prematurely first chance leave he kind of did if you go by life then you gotta have to put
[01:12:40] the jack in there and guys like that because got these are guys who will eventually not be
[01:12:45] forgotten but it'll be like when you look at cards from the 80s hockey cards you're like oh
[01:12:49] maybe it's an air-rock-nroller like I'm everything we're guys on this list of five
[01:12:54] yeah like Mackeye's and you know or maybe why is that you know didn't play hockey like Doc
[01:13:00] Emerick maybe should be on the wall or maybe you know Chico Rush even though he did play
[01:13:06] but still you know I mean those guys like Chris Terrier yeah Terrier would be interesting
[01:13:12] I don't think it was very important to the younger years little double and obviously it was
[01:13:17] all right well we're getting a little late here on time so we're gonna wrap this thing up
[01:13:22] but I want to just talk a little football real quick so what do you got Tone?
[01:13:27] So for me yeah I'm thinking the raiders win by three of course this isn't Raider fan saying this because
[01:13:32] yes I'm very worried about our quarterback position I'm not worried about our defense which I
[01:13:37] think will be maybe the second or third best in the league this year I love our receivers
[01:13:41] I love Chico B Myers I think he is very underlust guy trade talker I mean you know obviously
[01:13:49] rock-bowers that's so much things Michael Merr so much things I'm looking forward to seeing
[01:13:53] but the quarterback is the question and you know that is the biggest thing with the raiders
[01:13:58] running back to I running back a little bit of a question too I was happy to see how
[01:14:07] this is and but he hates that team so much he wouldn't go there nice that was kind of cool
[01:14:11] but I don't mind division of fucker yeah yeah I agree but but I'm gonna pick the raiders only
[01:14:16] some Raider fan I think you guys are gonna beat the giants Chris I just you know I don't know
[01:14:21] I need to watch the giants I really have I paid more attention to the Vikings this
[01:14:25] is just because you but I have with the giants John's gonna be bad the giants yeah
[01:14:30] giants have the chance to probably to be the worst team in the league
[01:14:34] I think them in New England are gonna be pushing for that number one overall pick in April
[01:14:40] now I took the in our pick-up pool at work I took the raiders over the chargers
[01:14:46] I'd like Jim Harball a lot and I think he's going to make the chargers a really good team
[01:14:52] I just don't think he has all the pieces yet but so what about stay healthy too and yeah
[01:14:58] can Herbert stay healthy who is he throwing to like you said the raiders defense is going to be
[01:15:03] pretty good I I have the raiders win in that game and then you go and look this might just be my
[01:15:10] purple tinted glasses that I'm wearing here when it comes to the Vikings but you know you said
[01:15:15] the biggest question mark with the raiders is gardener min too and your quarterback position well
[01:15:20] is this exact same thing in Minnesota when I look at the Vikings and I see a team that
[01:15:26] has stuff on Gilmore now I think he really does help that secondary the corner back room
[01:15:33] is going to be a lot better than it was let's say four or five months ago I think the Vikings
[01:15:39] have the best safety room in the NFL I think when you have you know camp binom and josh
[01:15:45] metallis and Harrison Smith those guys are studs they can and metallis is awesome he's
[01:15:51] positionless he can play anywhere on that secondary I like him a lot I like our secondary a lot
[01:15:58] better than I did a while though I like our edge room a ton I think we are going to be able to
[01:16:04] get after the quarterback I'm a little nervous about the interior of the Vikings defensive line
[01:16:09] and a little bit nervous about their offensive line and offensively they are stacked if Sam
[01:16:16] Donald this is the best possible situation that Sam Donald is ever going to be in in his career
[01:16:23] if he doesn't want to be a career journeyman backup he's got to do something this year and
[01:16:31] with all the weapons that he has with the head coach that he has with the Aaron Jones now on
[01:16:37] that on that team Minnesota I think can be a fucking dark horse I really do but I also see a world
[01:16:43] where Sam Donald throws you know 25 intersections this year and they won six games but I do think that
[01:16:50] they should be the giants they have to be the giants I'm going to tell you that right now their
[01:16:55] schedule going forward in the beginning of the season is brutal we go play the giants and then
[01:17:01] we're home against San Fran and we're home against Houston and then we play the jets in London
[01:17:06] and then we come home to play the packers these are brutal games and if you drop game one
[01:17:12] do you can go oh and six so I think that they're going to win game one I think they're going to
[01:17:18] keep the giants I think they're going to win be them pretty good but you know this season I'm complete
[01:17:23] it's all on the back of San Donald like you guys it's all on the national argument you and the
[01:17:29] problem that you as he's never in between he's either has a great game or a shit game yeah it's not
[01:17:34] really like enough to win game usually so I am worried but I mean I think we're better off
[01:17:40] than we were in last year and a lot of aspects of the team and you know a good quarterback away
[01:17:45] from babysitting into the playoffs because if you remember that division last year besides KC who we
[01:17:49] did beat last year yeah it is of course 60 something I think 63 again San Diego to last year
[01:17:57] you can get in you can get in on you know in the playoffs on that division but I think we're
[01:18:01] we've got to see what the full-term acquisition does but it's exciting man it's back and look
[01:18:05] forward to and obviously devils are coming up too so I want to cool stuff from the crowd too because
[01:18:09] the summer gets kind of lame so who's going into Super Bowl Bob
[01:18:13] I was just sitting here thinking about how much I wanted that fourth family couple two thousand
[01:18:17] one what were you guys talking about not the mess
[01:18:20] I think Bobby Thompson should have had the Yankees and changed her off the whole season before
[01:18:25] and that's what they amount of wild card right now there's still time
[01:18:29] yeah let's true you know it's better is being first place in your division like
[01:18:33] they're not here so we have to get some credit to Aaron's judgment I don't
[01:18:41] just I mean I love it so I just I thought I saw to my dad about baseball the time
[01:18:46] because your Yankees are everything to him and it's just so funny that he's got like a block
[01:18:50] he cannot say judge like his favorite player it's judge every time we talk it's like
[01:18:54] judge this judge I'm like it's judge that judge like tell me that jazzam
[01:18:58] he's got needlemire he's always been on the guys whoever on the show is going to call
[01:19:03] nements his right name yeah we did you know what you guys want to that oh yeah
[01:19:08] we didn't talk about that that's right uh her to shoulder right can we stop sending
[01:19:14] fucking players to play overseas over the phone for Craig says him Jesus yeah what the
[01:19:19] fuck man so okay so it's cornice epic is going to be in I mean COVID-19
[01:19:24] neighbors name on time we got a bit of a sudden injury for I know he left the ice but I didn't
[01:19:28] see the actual injury I know that it's not that bad yeah he's leaving he's leaving
[01:19:32] lobby or wherever he is now and coming back to jersey I think today so he'll get checked
[01:19:38] out hopefully he'll be good to go come training camp but like come on man yeah we we don't
[01:19:43] need this shit to start now yeah you know you're playing basketball oh man just stay healthy put
[01:19:50] all these guys in bubble wrap until game one please I don't want to see him open up a fucking
[01:19:55] curtain and there's jack and neco and timo and then they have to just unwrap them in bubble
[01:20:00] wrap and then it can come out and play I'm gonna be myself in one two because I think we
[01:20:06] send the beast squad overseas for the first two games I don't care about the Buffalo game just
[01:20:10] give me a healthiest one for opening deck and I really want the Buffalo games because I just
[01:20:15] wanted I want to just smoke lindi rough I know I'm I mean he's not like he's a bad guy but you
[01:20:22] know former coach I just want to smoke him so but anything else you guys want to add for tonight
[01:20:28] you know man any you guys excited about you don't you just coming out I am gonna check it out
[01:20:32] or it will say really cool we want to see it as scary yeah I put it in the style you
[01:20:37] wait may have you know it's not so grab it when you can we went to see my wife and I
[01:20:40] like a couple of weeks ago went to see a deadpool and Wolverine I got great things it was fun
[01:20:45] it was definitely a really fun movie so terrifier three boys you guys got you guys haven't
[01:20:51] seen any of the terrifier films no I didn't know they made a third one yeah there's a third one
[01:20:55] coming out on Christmas I've come back to come out October 11th but it's based on Christmas
[01:20:58] but I'm gonna tell anybody in the list of such a show I'm not scared to clouds I don't
[01:21:03] get shit about clouds but I will say art to clown makes Pennywise from it look like the Easter
[01:21:08] bunny and say it's really 80s what's also about those movies too is the guy who makes
[01:21:14] him dammy on the own he's badass makes he does a lot of special effects on the lot special
[01:21:19] of the makeup himself so it's one of the 80s you know look to it but they're totally like the
[01:21:28] fire Jason Voorhees you know leather face he is the next one that actually I think he is going to
[01:21:34] be a historic character art to clown and the guy who plays and David Howard Thornton's really talented
[01:21:39] you went to a lot of the time yeah had a one-to-show for two hours on the podcast yeah it's
[01:21:43] really cool guy really nice guy actually but you see what arc to clown does to people it's absolutely
[01:21:48] like it's so funny about putting joyable anybody listening check out the terrifier movies and if
[01:21:53] you want to know more go on wherever you get your podcast and listen to the tampa morgue it's another
[01:21:59] show that Tony does it's horror and metal music and a lot of cool shit on there so check that out
