[00:14:40] Jay Pandolfo in the second period gets his sixth at 218, gets the Devils on the board early in the second.

[00:14:53] He was just battling for the puck behind the net.

[00:15:51] Because at 1344, that's when Stevens absolutely laid out Correa.

[00:15:55] And he was down on the ice.

[00:15:57] And it looked very, very bad.

[00:16:00] And as he's sitting there, seconds went by, 30, whatever it was.

[00:16:03] And he just kind of puffed out.

[00:16:05] His visor got full from his breath coming out.

[00:16:08] And he disappeared down the tunnel for a while.

[00:16:11] When he does come back, the way he scored, it was just a clean beat.

[00:16:15] It just, Brodeur just beat you clean, streaking down the left wing.

[00:16:17] And you got to think, right?

[00:16:20] Like, you know, spoiler alert.

[00:16:21] We know we won the cup.

[00:16:22] If Anaheim wins that cup and Correa did that after coming back from that hit,

[00:16:27] nobody else who got hit by Stevens like that came back.

[00:16:29] He was like the first one to do it and then score and put it in your face.

[00:16:33] I mean, that's a story.

[00:16:34] You know, that's one of those magical things.

[00:16:36] Fortunately for us, they did not win the cup.

[00:16:44] And he just comes back and rubs it in our face with a goal clean.

[00:16:46] Think about how many younger people never saw Correa play that listened to the show maybe.

[00:16:51] Because I think he's the guy that, like when you watched him play,

[00:16:54] like I've seen him play live a lot too.

[00:16:55] He was an awesome player, man.

[00:16:57] Just watching him on the ice.

[00:16:58] I think he doesn't get enough credit now.

[00:17:24] And Paul Correa shoots the puck basically the same spot he scored on, right?

[00:17:35] And he takes away the angle and he just beautiful glove save.

[00:17:40] Drops the puck and then just shoots it down the ice.

[00:17:43] And I'm just like, man, that was – I forgot how great he was at that.

[00:18:33] so I can see how the whole play is being set up.

[00:18:35] And every time I started my notes with, oh, there it goes.

[00:18:39] And I'm like, this has got to be the goal.

[00:18:40] And then it wasn't, but then it was.

[00:47:29] Devils coach Pat Burns had scratched Kenny during the first six games of that series as New Jersey and the Ducks battled all the way to a seventh game.

[00:47:38] The night before game seven, Burns called Kenny over and told him he was putting him in for game seven.

[00:47:43] I thought I should have been playing anyway, Danico said.

[00:47:46] I think 99% of the people did too.

[00:47:49] But I'm a believer it happened for a reason.

[00:47:52] Devils won game seven, three nothing, while the crowd chanted Dano Dano every time he got his stick on the puck.

[00:47:58] He'd won two other cups in New Jersey, but this one had an entirely different feel to it.

[00:48:03] For me, Danico said, it was kind of the perfect ending.

[00:48:06] He would retire from the game about a month later at a farewell press conference that was as emotional as the night in game seven.

[00:48:14] I had a couple of calls, Danico said.

[00:48:16] Token calls from teams, possible signings, coming to camp.

[00:48:19] I really didn't entertain the idea.

[00:48:21] I wasn't coming back to New Jersey.

[00:48:23] It was just the way I wanted it to end.

[00:48:26] He loved labeling himself as lunch pail guy that New Jersey Devils fans could relate to.

[00:48:31] Kenny insisted he probably knew about two-thirds of the fans who attended game seven.

[00:48:36] I think that's probably accurate.

[00:48:38] Kenny seems to know everybody.

[00:48:39] The arena is 19,040 for hockey games.

[00:48:43] By Kenny's estimate, he knew 12,693 of those fans.

[00:55:00] And there's little reason to believe they won't still be among the top tier when the

[00:55:06] I disagree with that, but it won't look quite the same.

[00:55:09] And that's likely to matter in the end.

[00:55:11] Carolina will be in rebuilding mode on the blue line after the departures of Brady Shea,

[00:55:15] Brett Pesci, respectively.

[00:55:18] And it's an ability to entice trade deadline acquisitions like Jake Getzel to stay.

[00:55:22] He instead took the money and ran to Tampa, leaves a familiar hole when it comes to proven offense

[00:55:27] in the top six.

[00:55:28] It's certainly no time to shed tears for a Hurricanes team that'll probably still be quite

[00:55:32] successful.

[00:55:33] But it wouldn't be hyperbolic to suggest that the preseason calls for another championship

[00:55:37] parade in Raleigh are just a little less loud than they've been in recent years.

[00:55:43] I do not think that the Carolina Hurricanes have what it takes to do any kind of damage

[00:55:48] this year, especially now what Antti Ranta just left the NHL too.

[01:03:37] The fourth team on this list is a team that we all consensusly agree is definitely going to dip down a lot.

[01:03:45] I have them not making the playoffs this year, and that's the Los Angeles Kings.

[01:04:40] Anze Kopitar is still a star at age 37, and Drew Doughty is back for another pursuit at 34.

[01:04:45] But unless the unproven players on the younger side of the aisle assert themselves in a big way,

[01:04:51] even another first-round fold might be asking too much this time around.

[01:06:19] GM Doug Armstrong took advantage of an oft-discussed but little-utilized means of roster building when he tendered offer sheets to restricted free agents Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway and ultimately wrestled them away from the Edmonton Oilers.

[01:06:32] The former first-round picks gained experience during the Oilers' run to the Cup final.

[01:06:36] And Armstrong bet big on them to continue that trajectory, signing Broberg to two years at better than $4.5 million apiece.

[01:06:45] And Holloway just shy of $2.3 million per.

[01:06:47] Snatching the pair from Alberta and holding on to forward Pavel Bucinevic with a six-year, $48 million extension were Armstrong's only headline-grabbing transactions, which was fine for attracting short-term attention, but not exactly ground-shaking when it comes to boosting the fortunes of a team that missed the playoffs by six points last spring.

[01:07:07] The Blues were 24th in the league with just 2.85 goals per game in 23-24 and won't experience much of a change, even with Broberg and Holloway, who have combined for precisely 11 goals and 31 points across 170 career regular season games.

[01:07:23] Could they find their way into the mix for an eighth seed come springtime? Sure.

[01:07:27] But it's more likely Armstrong is answering questions about a third-straight playoff miss while Broberg and Holloway are watching former teammates on television.

[01:07:34] I agree with that 100%.

[01:07:35] I have no place in my life for the St. Louis Blues.

[01:07:39] I don't like them as a team.

[01:07:41] I don't like Missouri as a state.

[01:07:44] And blue is probably my least favorite color.

[01:08:44] And then leaving Las Vegas became a theme for the summer.

[01:08:48] Franchise stalwart Jonathan Marchesaw was the highest profile to departure when he went to Nashville with the lucrative free agency deal and was followed out the door by fellow forwards William Carrier, Chandler Stevenson, Michael Amadio, and Anthony Manta.

[01:09:01] Not to mention veteran defensive Alex Martinez.

[01:09:04] Goalie Logan Thompson was offloaded to Washington.

[01:09:06] And though GM Kelly McCrimmon did welcome the likes of Iola Samsonoff and Victor Olofsson on one-year deals, it's got to be recorded as a net loss both of skill and depth.

[01:09:16] But they have Alex Holtz now.

[01:09:19] Like, this is done.

[01:09:21] These guys are winning the cup.

[01:09:25] The team has top-end talent with Jack Eichel and Mark Stone, but little safety net if they again deal with injuries.

[01:09:31] And, of course, they will.

[01:09:32] Like, Mark Stone can't stay healthy.

[01:09:33] Eichel hasn't played more than 67 games in two full seasons with Vegas.

[01:09:37] And Stone hasn't played as many as 70 since 2018-19, which is split between the Knights and Ottawa, meaning any expectations that they'll be near 82 this time is appropriately a gamble.

[01:09:49] What do you guys think?

[01:09:54] Do you think that that list is – do you think there's any other teams that you could think of off the top of your head that you maybe would have put on this list?

[01:10:12] Like, we've talked about, like, Washington and how there's so much – talk about how they got better and maybe they're ready for another push.

[01:10:19] Like, I don't see it, but are there expectations there that if they didn't, that they fit this list of disappointment?

[01:10:27] Like, I see the Rangers, for example, collecting a lot of regular season points again and going nowhere in the playoffs.

[01:10:33] That's a disappointment to me.

[01:10:34] I think they should be on the list.

[01:10:36] Yeah, but I know other little blips, maybe not as big as those.

[01:10:41] Philadelphia had a great year last year.

[01:10:42] You know, they made a lot of improvement.

[01:10:45] Nobody was picking them to be some massively huge playoff team.

[01:10:48] So, you could say expectations are low, but to them and their fans, I don't think they want to step back, and I think that's very possible.

[01:10:55] So, we'll see.

[01:10:57] Yeah, I mean, I think the Flyers are going to be okay this year.

[01:11:01] I don't see them doing anything major.

[01:11:04] And I have Washington dead last in the Metropolitan Division.

[01:11:07] I do think that they will be dead last.

[01:11:10] I think Columbus will take them in points and take that seventh spot.

[01:11:14] But, I don't know, the Rangers, I guess we can put in there, but it's so hard to gauge that.

[01:11:19] Like, their team was so freaking good last year.

[01:11:21] And if their main guys show up in that final, they're probably playing for the Cup.

[01:11:26] You know, how much of that was the guys were injured on the Rangers?

[01:11:30] How much of that was the guys on the Rangers are not big-time players?

[01:11:34] And how much of that was Florida just saying, no, no, no, you're not doing this?

[01:11:39] I think there's a little bit of all those things.

[01:11:42] So, but I think that they're aging and their window's getting smaller and smaller.

[01:11:47] And a lot of times, when your window starts to shrink and you're not doing it, the noise gets louder.

[01:11:57] If this team struggles a little bit, whether through injury or just whether through poor play,

[01:12:04] I see the fans in New York completely having a fucking conniption over this and calling for everybody's head.

[01:12:11] And that sometimes does force management in the Rangers to make stupid moves at trade deadlines and stuff like that.

[01:12:18] So you can't take that out of the equation because they've been known to do shit like that before.

[01:12:25] So I still think the Metropolitan Division comes down to the Rangers and the Devils.

[01:12:30] I don't know what the Rangers are going to do in the playoffs.

[01:12:34] But I could see them, they're not going to make it to the Eastern Conference Final again.
