A quick look at the Devils four game loosing streak. How big is the upcoming game against the Ducks? This year NJ was supposed to have the goalie situation fixed. Dougie Hamilton needs to find his game.
[00:00:06] Hey everyone, Mr. Devil here, Kenny Danico, three-time Stanley Cup champion of the New Jersey Devils.
[00:00:13] You're listening to the Uncle Puckers, New Jersey Devils Podcast with Chris, Dan, Bobby, and Tony, the Uncle Puckers. Let's go Devils!
[00:00:26] Hey, what is up there, Devil fans? This is Chris from the Uncle Puckers, New Jersey Devils Podcast with you.
[00:00:31] So this was supposed to be a little quick preview about the upcoming game against the Ducks,
[00:00:37] but the way the last four games have gone, I just have a little bit more I'm going to say.
[00:00:43] So this might be a little bit longer than the normal preview video.
[00:00:48] Usually we do a podcast on this day with the guys, but everybody's got, you know, fall activities and things going on
[00:00:55] and getting ready for Halloween and whatnot. So I'm flying solo because I'm apparently the guy with no life, but that's fine.
[00:01:02] I'd rather be here talking Devils hockey, to be honest, than being anywhere else.
[00:01:06] So let's just dive in, right? The last four games the Devils have lost.
[00:01:13] There has been, I think, a lot of good and a lot of bad rolled into that.
[00:01:19] I'm not going to spend this entire time here pissing and moaning about this team and all the negative and stuff.
[00:01:26] We basically had 82 games of that last year and it's, you know, it just doesn't make you feel good.
[00:01:33] You know, why do you want to come out here and just crap all over the team that you love?
[00:01:36] So I'm going to try not to do that. Now there are some places where I maybe, I maybe do lean a little bit that way.
[00:01:45] I'm going to try not to. So, you know, four losses in a row, a possible eight points.
[00:01:50] You walk away with two. You managed to get two of them into overtime, you know, Washington, the Islanders, and we lost them both.
[00:01:57] The Tampa Bay game, I'm willing to just throw that away. That was a brutal game.
[00:02:03] Jake Allen was not himself. So we thought maybe, I don't know. Is he, is this him? I hope not.
[00:02:10] But okay. He played last night. He played better, but still issues in that Islander game as well.
[00:02:15] Um, but he, he played well, he made some big saves, but, uh, let me just back it up.
[00:02:22] Goaltending like this was supposed to be different, right?
[00:02:26] We were going into this year with what we all believe is a solid tandem and Jacob Markstrom and, uh, Jake Allen, two veterans that have been there, done that.
[00:02:37] They're going to come. Now we, you know, bolstered a blue line, uh, and you can see the, the goaltenders are not being left hung out to dry nearly as much as Vanacek and Schmidt were last year with the defensive core.
[00:02:50] These guys are playing an all around better system. Um, the devils have had a rough go of it just as far as even the scheduling to begin with.
[00:02:59] Right. They start out in Prague. They play those two games. They come home. It's been basically every other night with back to back smushed in.
[00:03:07] There's really no time to practice. There's no time to really get the system going. This is going to be a, uh, learn and evolve on the fly and do it in game time reps.
[00:03:17] And we're kind of seeing that. I think there is a lot of good to take away from this team. When I watch them and I see the good, I say to myself that, yeah, they're, they're going to be okay.
[00:03:29] As long as they don't get bitten with the injury bug and as long as they don't get in their own heads, but the back end, the, the goaltending has got to be better.
[00:03:39] There's really no other way to say it. And you look at just the last two games. Okay. The Detroit game and the Islander game, the Washington game was far enough away that, okay.
[00:03:50] They lost that one. They ended up getting a point. You actually had things in that game that you can feel good about.
[00:03:55] Then you roll into that Tampa Bay game where you just got your ass handed to you on a platter, throw it out.
[00:04:02] Jake Allen was not having his game. The rest of the guys. Yeah. You scored five goals, but it doesn't mean a thing when you let eight in.
[00:04:10] I really want to talk about the last two games. So you're, you're playing in Detroit. Detroit is not a great team.
[00:04:18] Like I understand that any team can beat anybody at any given night in the NHL, but this is a game that you're supposed to go in there and win.
[00:04:25] And they played a really good defensive game, especially goal 10, but they dominated the game.
[00:04:33] The devils, the devils dominated the zone time. They dominated in shots. They dominated all around and they ended up losing the game.
[00:04:42] Well, why'd they end up losing the game? Well, it's a tie game. If I remember correctly, late in the third and Dawson Mercer takes a penalty late in the third, not a penalty.
[00:04:56] You want him to take, right? I understand. He's coming over into the neutral zone.
[00:05:00] A red wing is barreling down on him. He puts his stick up just to kind of defend himself, but it's still defend yourself, not defend yourself.
[00:05:08] Take the hit. It's better than putting a stick into a player's face and getting two minutes for cross-checking in a tie game late in a tie game.
[00:05:16] Now you got to go on a penalty kill. You got to kill this thing off. And what happens? Patrick Kane is a good shot.
[00:05:23] It's a good look. Jacob Markstrom has to make that save. There's no other way to put it. Jacob Markstrom has to make that save.
[00:05:32] When it's five on four, somebody's going to be open. You have to make the save.
[00:05:37] Patty Kane got the shot. It was a clean look. Doesn't change the fact that Markstrom needed to make that.
[00:05:43] Now, look, it's cliche. It's cliche for a reason, right? Your goaltender has got to be your best penalty killer. He just wasn't that night.
[00:05:52] Then we let the empty netter in. We lose five to three.
[00:05:56] Heartbreaking game, but again, a game that you can look at and say, we did a lot of good things, right? We dominated this thing. We got them on shots.
[00:06:04] Whatever. Getting to the Islander game.
[00:06:09] Again, Islanders are not... I mean, I get it. They're a playoff team last year, but when you look at especially offensive firepower, they have good goaltending.
[00:06:17] They play good defense. It's tough to score on them, but when you go through the last four games, right, where the Devils have scored 16 goals, it averages around four to a game.
[00:06:27] Exactly. Not about. Exactly. Four to a game.
[00:06:30] In the NHL, if you score four, you should win that game.
[00:06:33] Good teams, I say. Good teams. You score four, you should win that game.
[00:06:37] The problem is that we let 23 in in four games.
[00:06:42] That's horrible.
[00:06:44] It's skewed by the eight-goal Tampa Bay game, but it's still part of this, right?
[00:06:49] And you get into the Islander game, and you battle back.
[00:06:54] I love the fact in the Islander game that that was a good game, and that was a fun game to watch.
[00:06:59] There was a lot of good to take away from that game. We'll get into that.
[00:07:03] But the bad has got to be discussed first.
[00:07:05] I do like the fact that when you're down a goal and we pulled our goalie, how long has it been, Devil fans, since we didn't let the empty netter in?
[00:07:15] We actually got one, and we got the goal with the six-on-five.
[00:07:19] We tied up, Jesper Bratt, with a beautiful goal.
[00:07:21] They were pressuring like crazy.
[00:07:23] They beat Ilya Sorokin to tie the game.
[00:07:25] Nico Heischer, right off the bat in overtime, has a beautiful look.
[00:07:29] He rings it off the crossbar, and they go down, they score, and we lose again.
[00:07:34] That's another one, right?
[00:07:36] Allen needs to be better.
[00:07:38] Markstrom needs to be better.
[00:07:39] These guys are old, cagey veterans.
[00:07:42] They know this.
[00:07:43] Now, if there's more to that, and there's something down the road that maybe this is a Dave Rogalski, the Devil's goaltending coach problem,
[00:07:51] maybe there's something in how he's communicating what he wants from those guys.
[00:07:55] And I don't know enough about goaltending to really get into that.
[00:07:59] That's why, hopefully, our resident goaltender expert, Dan, will be back on the show next week.
[00:08:05] And these are questions I definitely want to talk to him about.
[00:08:07] So tune in for that, because I think that'll be interesting and fun to listen to.
[00:08:13] But good stuff, right?
[00:08:15] Okay, you've got the goalie pulled.
[00:08:17] It sucks that you were down a goal, but you managed to salvage a point, right?
[00:08:20] I think a lot of other times, especially last season, that puck goes back into the empty netter a la Detroit,
[00:08:26] and you lose another one where you basically outplayed the team, and you're going to walk away with Dungats.
[00:08:32] Devils were able to curb that.
[00:08:35] But there are a couple players, and not just Markstrom and Allen.
[00:08:40] Because I think Markstrom and Allen are going to be fine.
[00:08:42] Like, they'll find their game.
[00:08:43] Like, these guys have been around long enough.
[00:08:46] They go through the peaks and valleys.
[00:08:48] They'll figure it out.
[00:08:49] I truly believe that.
[00:08:52] Guys, I think we have to have a conversation about Dougie Hamilton.
[00:08:57] I really do.
[00:09:00] He has been, for lack of a better term, atrocious, horrible, un-fucking-playable.
[00:09:09] His defense has been really bad.
[00:09:14] And look, the next show that we do, we're going to dive into the overall analytics,
[00:09:20] the first dozen games of the season.
[00:09:22] Where do the Devils stand, juxtaposed with the rest of the NHL?
[00:09:27] I'm just talking about my eye test right now.
[00:09:30] I'm not even looking at analytics.
[00:09:31] I'm not looking at numbers to say, here's the proof that Hamilton isn't playing well.
[00:09:36] It's the eye test.
[00:09:37] I mean, that's all you need to see.
[00:09:40] And when the offense isn't coming, I think he's got two points, one goal, one assist so far in the 11 games.
[00:09:45] However, in the Devil 10, 11 games the Devils have played, he has his two points.
[00:09:49] Now, the problem with Dougie Hamilton is when you're not contributing offensively,
[00:09:54] his horrible defensive play sticks out like a sore thumb.
[00:09:57] So if you're not going to be putting the puck in the net the other way, well, you know, something's got to give here.
[00:10:03] Because if you're not scoring or you're not creating offensive chances,
[00:10:07] and you're playing like absolute dog shit on the blue line and back behind your own goal,
[00:10:13] well, then you're just hurting your team.
[00:10:16] I like Dougie Hamilton.
[00:10:17] I really do.
[00:10:18] But we saw this before the injury last year.
[00:10:22] He was at a position a ton.
[00:10:24] He was getting scored on left and right.
[00:10:29] And that's kind of rolled back into this year.
[00:10:34] So I just think, yeah, there's something's not right with Dougie.
[00:10:37] He has got to clean his game up.
[00:10:39] He's a stalwart on this team.
[00:10:41] He's got a big contract.
[00:10:42] He's a big name.
[00:10:43] Got to clean it up.
[00:10:45] I have been really disappointed with Dougie Hamilton's play so far this season.
[00:10:52] Now, you know, I think that Siegenthaler played great.
[00:10:55] I thought Kovacevic has been playing good.
[00:10:57] I think that Pesci has stepped in.
[00:11:00] And you have seen this guy, the veteran, right, that just knows what to do in essentially every situation that's thrown at him.
[00:11:08] And it is really good to see because Luke Hughes is going to make mistakes.
[00:11:14] And when you are playing with somebody like Pesci, I mean, Luke made a glaring mistake in his own zone against the Islanders that led to a Kyle McClain basically one-on-one with Jake Allen.
[00:11:24] And Allen was able to make the save.
[00:11:25] No harm, no foul.
[00:11:26] But these are growing pains that a young, really good defenseman like Luke Hughes is going to go through.
[00:11:33] So pairing him with that just solid dude in Brett Pesci I think is going to help this Devil team down the road.
[00:11:40] Super happy with the way I've seen Brett Pesci play in these first two games.
[00:11:45] And you could tell, right, he's a leader.
[00:11:47] He's going to really help this blue line.
[00:11:50] Dougie Hamilton has been the worst defenseman that the Devils have had.
[00:11:55] I mean, at this point, Seamus Casey and Nemitz are playing.
[00:11:58] I mean, I don't know if they would play any worse.
[00:12:02] So that's concerning to me.
[00:12:05] This is a big player on this team.
[00:12:07] And I think, okay, we can probably overlook the deficiencies if the guy was getting power play goals.
[00:12:12] If he was getting shots in from his blue line and getting the points.
[00:12:16] You know, Dougie Hamilton has got, you know, six or seven, eight points already in these 10, 11, 12 games.
[00:12:22] Well, okay, his defense struggles, but he's doing it on the other end.
[00:12:26] He's not.
[00:12:27] So like I said, you're not contributing offensively.
[00:12:30] Defense sticks out.
[00:12:31] The bad defense sticks out like a sore thumb.
[00:12:34] So I really do want to see Dougie get better.
[00:12:38] You know, there's been a lot of talk about Palat.
[00:12:40] Bob and I had a big conversation about him on the last podcast.
[00:12:45] I thought defensively, Palat played pretty good against the Islanders.
[00:12:50] And I was thinking like, you know, what do you do with Palat?
[00:12:53] And I don't know if there's any place else that you can put him.
[00:12:56] Because really the only logical spot would be to swap him and Cotter out.
[00:13:01] And put Cotter up on that first line.
[00:13:03] But then you're breaking up that Cotter, Holla, and Nason line.
[00:13:08] Which I think is an energy.
[00:13:09] When they're playing good, that is an energy line that can bring a lot to this lineup.
[00:13:14] I don't like the idea of maybe splitting them up.
[00:13:17] So what are you going to do?
[00:13:18] You're going to bring Palat and put him down on the fourth line?
[00:13:20] He's what, six, six and a half million dollar player.
[00:13:23] Guy's got two rings.
[00:13:24] And you're going to throw him on the fourth line at that point.
[00:13:26] Try and trade him.
[00:13:27] Do whatever if you're not going to use him like that.
[00:13:30] So I think that that's probably the only, at this moment, reasonable place to put him.
[00:13:35] Up with Bratt and Jack Hughes.
[00:13:38] So I'd like to see, get a little bit more familiar with playing with those guys and their style and their tendencies.
[00:13:44] And hopefully we can start seeing a little more from Palat.
[00:13:49] I have no complaints so far over these 12 games or so about Sheldon Keefe.
[00:13:54] I think he's done a very good job as putting the guys in the right place.
[00:13:58] Being honest about this team's play.
[00:14:01] And I like the system that he's employed so far.
[00:14:05] Another great move last night.
[00:14:07] Curtis McDermott comes in.
[00:14:08] Nate Bastian gets to sit.
[00:14:10] And McDermott comes in.
[00:14:11] He played fantastic.
[00:14:13] You got everything you wanted from Curtis McDermott.
[00:14:15] Right?
[00:14:15] Huge hit.
[00:14:16] Fired up the fans.
[00:14:17] Fired up the team.
[00:14:19] Got into a little scrum.
[00:14:20] That's what you want from Curtis McDermott.
[00:14:22] And that hit was gorgeous.
[00:14:25] Completely clean.
[00:14:25] And the crazy thing is I actually screwed up because I watched the game on – recorded it.
[00:14:31] So I recorded it from work.
[00:14:33] I got home to sit down.
[00:14:34] I accidentally recorded on MSG the Islander broadcast, not the Devil's one.
[00:14:40] So I would have loved to have heard Bill Spaulding's call on Jesper Bratz game winner.
[00:14:45] But instead I've got – it was – oh my god.
[00:14:49] Butch Goring.
[00:14:50] And I don't know who the play-by-play guy is for the Islanders.
[00:14:52] When that hit happened, Butch Goring said, oh, look at that.
[00:14:55] He got his elbow up.
[00:14:56] He got away with that.
[00:14:57] Butch Goring needs to get glasses.
[00:14:59] That hit was clean.
[00:15:00] Clean as a whistle.
[00:15:01] It was gorgeous.
[00:15:02] It was all shoulder to shoulder.
[00:15:04] Just because the guy is just now kind of coming to his senses, then it doesn't make it a bad hit.
[00:15:11] But I digress.
[00:15:12] Just wanted to tell a little story.
[00:15:14] So what are we going to expect from these devils now?
[00:15:18] When you're in a funk and you're trying and you think you're doing everything right and you're getting bad results, right?
[00:15:29] It's hard to work your way out of it.
[00:15:31] And sometimes these things can pile on and bad things out.
[00:15:36] This is why this game coming up on Sunday night against the Ducks, I believe it to be an extremely important game for the New Jersey Devils.
[00:15:46] This is the Anaheim Ducks.
[00:15:49] Let's not sugarcoat it.
[00:15:51] They suck.
[00:15:52] The Devils should win this game.
[00:15:55] And they should win it handily.
[00:15:59] The Devils had off Saturday.
[00:16:00] They play Sunday.
[00:16:01] They played Friday night at home.
[00:16:04] And Sunday they're back at home.
[00:16:06] They didn't have to leave their beds.
[00:16:08] The Ducks played the Rangers tonight, Saturday night.
[00:16:11] I'm doing this Saturday night.
[00:16:12] The Ducks played the Rangers.
[00:16:14] They lost 2-1 in that game.
[00:16:17] So they played a really good Ranger team.
[00:16:19] Now they're going to come in and play us.
[00:16:23] So where are the Ducks this year?
[00:16:25] Okay.
[00:16:25] Right now they're 3-2-1.
[00:16:27] They have seven points.
[00:16:28] They lost to the Rangers 2-1, like I said.
[00:16:30] But, and then tomorrow is their second night of a back-to-back.
[00:16:34] Dostal was in goal for them.
[00:16:35] He allowed two goals on 32 shots for a 938 save percentage.
[00:16:39] So we can assume to see James Reimer tomorrow, who is 1-0-1 on the season with a 9-06 save percentage and a goals against average of three exactly.
[00:16:52] Excuse me.
[00:16:52] I need a coffee.
[00:16:53] Troy Terry.
[00:16:54] He's leading the Ducks with five points.
[00:16:57] Four goals, one assist.
[00:16:59] Everybody else is down in the two and three point mark with that team.
[00:17:04] The cup odds for the Ducks are plus $30,000.
[00:17:10] So if you bet $100 on the Anaheim Ducks to win the cup this year, you'll win $30,000.
[00:17:18] They're over-under.
[00:17:19] This year is 70 and a half.
[00:17:21] Last year, the Ducks had 59 points.
[00:17:25] They were 27, 50, and five for those 59 points.
[00:17:28] And seventh, which is dead last.
[00:17:30] I mean, seventh in the Pacific.
[00:17:31] Not dead last.
[00:17:32] The Sharks were in that division.
[00:17:35] Last year, goals for was 30th.
[00:17:38] 204 goals scored was good for 30th out of the 32 teams.
[00:17:43] Goals against, they like that number 30.
[00:17:45] Let's go.
[00:17:45] Shout out Brodeur.
[00:17:47] 30th again in goals against with 295.
[00:17:51] So they don't score a lot.
[00:17:52] They get a lot of goals scored on them.
[00:17:55] This seems like a perfect remedy for what is ailing the Devils before they head out onto this road trip.
[00:18:02] Last year, the Ducks were bad, but playing the Devils, the Devils were worse.
[00:18:09] On December 17th, Anaheim beat us 5-1, and on March 1st, they beat us 4-3.
[00:18:15] Devils had a penchant last year of losing to really bad teams, and the Ducks being one of them.
[00:18:22] And the reason for that is because last year, the Devils were a really bad team.
[00:18:28] This is why this game is so important.
[00:18:30] The Devils absolutely have to win this game.
[00:18:35] If they lay a clunker and shit the bed against the Ducks in your barn before you're about to head out on that road trip out west,
[00:18:45] it could be, I think, devastating for this team.
[00:18:48] This four-game losing streak can turn into something really, really bad.
[00:18:52] Bad.
[00:18:54] And if that happens, then the season's gone, right?
[00:18:57] There's no playoffs.
[00:18:59] There's no nothing.
[00:18:59] And all of our excitement, all of the moves, it was all for naught.
[00:19:05] That's why they have got to win this game.
[00:19:07] And they've got to do it convincingly.
[00:19:08] Get Jacob Markstrom back in there.
[00:19:11] Let's play a solid game.
[00:19:14] Let's just roll the Ducks.
[00:19:16] Just roll them.
[00:19:17] I mean, okay, they put up a fight against the Rangers 2-1.
[00:19:19] I don't give a shit.
[00:19:21] You should roll this team.
[00:19:23] So this is the team to get right on.
[00:19:25] This is the game to get right on.
[00:19:26] The Devils got to go in.
[00:19:28] They have to win this game.
[00:19:29] And they got to feel good about themselves as they head out to the road trip.
[00:19:32] And I believe the next three opponents, you got the Quinn Cup coming up Wednesday night, I believe, in Vancouver.
[00:19:39] And then I think they have Calgary, who's playing really good hockey, and the Western Conference champs, Edmonton Oilers.
[00:19:48] Three really hard games.
[00:19:50] Calgary wasn't a playoff team last year, but they're a very good team.
[00:19:54] They're coming off to starting the season really hot.
[00:19:57] I did think they dropped one tonight, but I think they won like their first five or so.
[00:20:01] And this is also be nice to Jacob Markstrom's homecoming game.
[00:20:04] So let's get them in against the Ducks, get them feeling good, and then go up for the Quinn Cup and go beat Vancouver.
[00:20:12] You did it last year.
[00:20:13] You could do it again.
[00:20:14] But none of that matters.
[00:20:15] We're going to talk about all of that on the next episode of the Uncle Puckers.
[00:20:19] Right now, this game against the lowly Ducks, this is the most important game.
[00:20:27] You cannot drop this game.
[00:20:31] I think it would be devastating to the devil's psyche.
[00:20:35] The last two games against the Islanders and the Red Wings, there is a lot of good you can take away for these two losses.
[00:20:42] The fact you only got one point, there is a lot of good.
[00:20:45] You dominated play.
[00:20:46] You got goalied in Detroit, and you had a couple of bad bounces.
[00:20:51] But you managed to find your way back to get that point against the Islanders.
[00:20:55] That's important.
[00:20:56] All right?
[00:20:58] So let's just deal with the good.
[00:21:01] Ducks, come into the barn.
[00:21:03] Come into the Rock Sunday night.
[00:21:05] Blow them out.
[00:21:06] Just play the way you played the last two games.
[00:21:09] You'll win this game.
[00:21:10] Jacob Markstrom, put them back in.
[00:21:13] Have a good game.
[00:21:14] Hopefully they feel better about themselves, and they head out west.
[00:21:17] I'm real curious to know what you guys are thinking about the team so far.
[00:21:21] Am I being hyperbolic by saying that this is a, I don't want to use the word must-win game, but after dropping the last four and getting an opponent like this?
[00:21:32] You know, this is essentially a boxer in a championship fight, right?
[00:21:40] Losing a split decision after 12 rounds, and then his next fight is against a 12-year-old, and he gets his ass beat.
[00:21:49] That's what would happen here.
[00:21:52] And if the Devils do drop this game, then I think we really have to sit back and think about maybe we are all wrong about where this team is or where this team should be.
[00:22:05] Maybe the 112-point season two years ago, maybe that was the anomaly, and what we saw last year and so far in this small little patch here this year, maybe that's more of the reality.
[00:22:19] Maybe this isn't going to be a competing for a Stanley Cup now moving into the future.
[00:22:25] Maybe this is, we got to gradually get better, and hopefully we can do that down the road.
[00:22:30] I don't necessarily know yet.
[00:22:32] I'm not ready to say that this isn't real, that this team isn't good, because it is good.
[00:22:40] They have a lot of good pieces, and they have a lot of good parts that just, I think, need to just play a little bit better.
[00:22:46] They need to get some confidence, need to get some puck luck, need to get some things going their way.
[00:22:51] And more than anything, they need Markstrom to make some saves.
[00:22:57] Markstrom's got to play good, all right?
[00:22:59] I don't care about scoring the first goal, whatever.
[00:23:01] Devils have no problem scoring goals.
[00:23:04] I mean, this is obvious.
[00:23:05] But they've got to shore up the defense.
[00:23:08] They do that.
[00:23:09] Give the goaltenders a better chance at this.
[00:23:11] I think they're going to be fine.
[00:23:15] Big week coming up.
[00:23:16] And it starts with this game.
[00:23:18] Do not drop this game against the Ducks.
[00:23:20] That's all I'm going to say.
[00:23:23] We are going to be back to do a full podcast some point in the next day or so once we all get our schedules together and everything like that.
