A look at the Devils last 2 games and upcoming road trip.
Chris (00:01)
Welcome to the Uncle Parker New Jersey Double Podcast. I'm Chris with Bobby and Tim this evening. What's up boys? How's everybody doing?
Bobby (00:12)
Try to figure out if I'm happy or sad or just gonna get over this last game and move on. Very emotionally weird couple of days with the team.
Chris (00:21)
Hell hath no fury like a goalie scorned and I'll tell ya Mackenzie Blackwood, I mean, comes back to the Garden State where we all but basically helped him pack his shit to get him the fuck outta here and yeah, bad heel and all he comes into the rock and just, I mean, he was on, he was not letting a goal in, man, he was on a mission
Tim Wood (00:21)
You
Bobby (00:24)
Hmm, apparently.
Tim Wood (00:25)
hehe
Bobby (00:43)
44 save performance I believe that's a San Jose Sharks record in a 1-0 shutout. 44 shots against. Of course it is just to make it even worse.
Tim Wood (00:52)
the
Chris (00:52)
Of course it is.
Tim Wood (01:20)
very well we had a ton of chances just you know third game in four nights is a thing it happens and I don't know if you guys noticed this but the ice looked like it was absolute dogshit and like like it yeah it looked like it looked really bad I there's an Iron Maiden concert the night before so that'd be wild
Chris (01:33)
I didn't. I didn't notice that.
Bobby (01:41)
Yeah, that'll do it.
Chris (01:41)
Iron Maiden on ice? That'd be awesome, right? Skate to the hills! I can keep going.
Bobby (01:51)
We're going to stop right there. We're good.
Tim Wood (01:52)
Yeah, no, we didn't. We get it. We get it. It's cool. So yeah, it's... No, like, I just, you know, like the, you know, I know Jack and Luke eat shit, like, you know, once a game, like, that's like a, a lock, you know, just on their own, the late shit, but Teemo ate it once, just Seigenthaler, like, caught an edge. I thought he, went into boards pretty hard and I looked pretty awkward.
Chris (01:56)
I got a whole bunch more Iron Maiden songs I can sing.
Yeah, remember that.
Tim Wood (02:15)
And then the puck hopped right over Dougie's stick at the blue line. think it was on the six on four, might have been the six on five towards the of the game. Yeah, so it's just like the ice looked bad. They looked slow, they looked tired. And there's a lot of things that can go into that. But you know what? The process is still there and they're playing well. was just filling with some numbers. They're expected goal differential still going up. They're top in the league across the board in pretty much every advanced metric, top five, top 10.
Chris (02:22)
Yeah was.
Tim Wood (02:44)
Pretty much everything except for goalies.
Bobby (02:47)
They're letting in on average like 1 seventh of a goal less per game. The goals against average came down from like 3, 4 to 2, 0.7 % of a goal. takes basically two games to give up another goal. So that's really good. Yeah, it looked like they were having a little bit of trouble in the beginning, right? And like you said, the 3 and 4 is a thing. The back to back is a thing.
Tim Wood (02:52)
Yeah.
Bobby (03:10)
I'm really not too worried about this one going forward, just one of those games, but at the same time, like, it literally pisses me off that again, it's the last place team, we can't just bucket two points, you know what mean? It gets pretty furiating, but I'm not mad at the team. well then we're good.
Chris (03:21)
They're not the last place team anymore. They're not the worst team in the league anymore. The Predators are.
Tim Wood (03:25)
Thanks to us.
Chris (03:30)
You know it this I wanted to I did not want them to lose this game and it's not because San Jose is a bad team because I I've watched quite a few shark games and there. They're actually just a young team I don't know if I would classify them as a bad team they are learning and they're making they make mistakes and they get hemmed in their defensive zone and they give up goals but they have a lot of dudes on that team that.
Like I think this devil team, we still had, we didn't have Timo Meyer and we had Fabian Zetterlin, I think that this team would be fine. I really think that Zetterlin is a great player. I think he would have grown in this offense and playing on this team. And I think he would have been a top six guy that we'd be extremely happy with right now. And I'm not shitting on Timo. The deal is a deal. I get it. But I like Fabian Zetterlin and I love Sal Vrini and this kid's for real. He's a hell of a player.
Tim Wood (04:22)
Yeah, he is fun to watch man. He's gonna be so good. He's very much in that sort of somewhere in between kind of Crosby and Jacque's a little bit. He's got that two way game, but he's got a little bit of more offensive player. He's gonna be a good player. Like you throw in some other guys, Tifoli even though he skates with concrete blocks on his feet, he's still a very good player. Grandlin's a good player. Our future fourth line star, Nico Sturm is good player.
Bobby (04:23)
Sure.
Chris (04:32)
I agree.
I hope so.
Tim Wood (04:52)
Yeah, so yeah, after reading that article and then watching first read Evans on Montreal and then Sturm last night.
Chris (04:59)
Yeah, it's it was tough. The reason I wanted them to win that game was because of the schedule moving ahead this week. It was just to have those good vibes and feel good about yourself as you roll into the two games against Florida, which, know, look, this is this is the litmus test. This is it. Every game so far has led up to this moment tomorrow night. And that is how are you going to fare against the Stanley Cup champs? Because we beat them once last year.
Bobby (05:06)
Yes.
Tim Wood (05:07)
Yes.
Chris (05:29)
In their building we played a great game one of the few games that we actually had a complete 60 minutes But these two teams don't like each other and then if you you're dealing with two games in a row like I expect Thursday night to get really Chippy really physical and I'm not you know to this is like, you know, I Just think that this is the test for this team in and every level and it's kind of sucks that you shit the bed against
San Jose going in like you thought it going into that West Coast swing right Edmonton to Vancouver two really tough games two tough teams We kind of thought that they would beat the Calgary one and then we didn't know about the other two Then they were going the other way But I look at that Anaheim game and that six nothing or six to win against Anaheim is kind of that little springboard to get us in there and now we have a Big fat goose egg going down to Florida. So I don't know. Do you guys think that's gonna affect them in this game games going forward?
Bobby (06:25)
I don't I still think that everything's positive in that locker right now I did have them penciled in for a loss and a win in the last two games I kind of thought Islanders that seemed to me like again I just hate playing Islanders for whatever reason I very well could have seen us losing that game and beating San Jose we just flip-flopped it I think that they came off a very emotional win with the Islanders they just got goalied yesterday and goalied and scheduled right and now they're get a little break they're gonna go down to Florida not a break it's one day off but they're gonna go down to Florida and this team does play up
Tim Wood (06:47)
Yes.
Bobby (06:54)
in my opinion, and I think they're going to continue to do that. And then like you said, dude, any time you play the same team two days in a row or two games in a row, anything from the first game carries over. It's like a very mini kind of playoff set. anything that aggravates the two teams on Tuesday is going to be exacerbated on Thursday. So yeah, Thursday should be awesome.
Chris (07:05)
Yep.
It should be a lot of fun.
Tim Wood (07:13)
Yeah, that's gonna be must see TV. Yeah, I'm definitely gonna enjoy that. Another kind of thing that's going into this is, with Lazar and Basch and getting hurt, we have only 12 forwards on the roster right now. We don't have anyone else bringing in and we've been running out of the same 12 forwards out. But that Tatar-Dowling-McDermid line is barely getting like five, six, seven minutes a night. And when you have three games in four nights, I hate to keep bringing it up because
like that is going to strain your top three lines and you could see it but they still managed to outplay San Jose I think pretty significantly. mean putting 44 shots on them is good. They were just a little bit off, know, like and they're overpassing in a couple of places too. know, Mercer pass up, yeah.
Chris (08:00)
They got, yeah, no, was gonna say that you're right. They got a little too cute in some of those places where, you know, the whole, talked about it, you know, a week ago with this team doesn't cheat for offense. They were cheating a little bit yesterday. And I felt like San Jose was just in the, yeah, we had a lot of offensive pressure, but San Jose just kind of wanted those loose pucks more. They were skating their asses off. Like they wanted to beat this team. they,
They have watched this team a few games so far and there's just nights where you know San Jose just doesn't seem like they have anything going whether or not they're tired or young whatever they came into this game and I don't know if it was for to fully for Zetterlin for you know, Banachak Blackwood, but everybody there's a lot of former Devils on this team and I think the whole team had that game pencil circled on their calendar and you know it.
It bit us in the ass and I don't think we played a bad game at all. think that they beat us in the spots that even the goal, right? It was a fluky fucking goal. And, and you know, but again, we should have won that game, but I give full credit to San Jose. I thought they played a very good game and they, yeah.
Bobby (09:10)
Frustrating is the word right especially the first two periods. It just seemed like no matter what the Devils did They were getting no traction nothing was happening sticks were in the lane odd things were happening The third period was pretty good like all the pressure But yeah, it just seemed like it was just very frustrating Just one of those games where you can kind of watch it you just you know in your gut like of course We're gonna say we can get a goal and tie these guys and beat them But you also seen enough hockey to be like this doesn't feel right. Yeah
Tim Wood (09:11)
Yeah.
Chris (09:31)
I thought it, yeah.
Tim Wood (09:32)
You
Yeah, no, that's a good point. know, like about the shot speed in lanes, like so much is getting blocked, you know, like weird deflection stuff was just flying off into the corner. Like it wasn't just it. It was tough. So.
Chris (09:46)
What do you guys make of the Islander game? I mean, I'll just start by saying that I really hope the Islanders make the playoffs this year because I will pay any amount of money to watch Jack Hughes versus Ilya Sorokin for a seven game series because that was just awesome to see two guys that are top of their field at what they do and they both put on shows and I was like, man, I hope that we meet these guys in the playoffs because I would love to see that.
Tim Wood (10:01)
Hahaha
Chris (10:16)
for 7 game series.
Bobby (10:17)
I Jack just likes to score on New York goalies too, man. I know Shroken played great, but he still let in two of Jack's goals and he just got a flair for beating New York.
Chris (10:25)
Yeah, buddy, that one save that he made on that breakaway where he just stuck it up right pad out and he was I mean he was so strong on the post and you knew that you know that piss Jack off and yeah, you're right. But like they were they were going after each other man. This was that was like the matchup so far this year that was like that's what I want to see. So Rokin versus use as many games as possible.
Tim Wood (10:28)
That was insane.
Yep, that's going in the metro.
Chris (10:53)
Well, yeah, yeah, maybe. mean,
Tim Wood (10:54)
Yeah, I mean I went from I went from fetal position to naked in like six minutes. It was the best
Chris (11:01)
That was a heck of an ending, I'll tell you.
Bobby (11:03)
Yeah, this is-
This was one of the games I wasn't watching. I was out. I was paying attention to the score. And at one point, you know, I literally just put on, I saw three to one, I saw six minutes left and like, well, I don't need to keep watching this anymore. And then I just checked it again, like just literally a couple of minutes later. I'm like, I got to go home and throw this game on now. and that's great for the T listen, it's great. Those things are going to happen once in a while. Right. It's not a recipe for success. You don't want to have to score twice in the last four minutes all the time. And then when in overtime, but those are, those are huge wins and those are big points.
Chris (11:23)
Yeah.
Tim Wood (11:23)
Hahaha.
Bobby (11:35)
That's why I am just normally I'd really want to be pissed about that San Jose game, but I just can't I just can't be pissed about it right
Tim Wood (11:42)
Yeah, besides bragging about having a life that I don't. I couldn't agree more. Cool, I'll be sitting here with my dog.
Bobby (11:47)
I'm going out the next two Saturdays boys. That's three in a row If I could do four in a row I beat the devil's winning streak
Chris (11:58)
Yeah, right. It was like we finally got to three and now we just cannot get over the hump. What do you guys expect for this coming week? I mean, we're talking two games against the champs and one against the team that came into our barn and made us look stupid with like an eight to two victory or something a few weeks ago. So these are three tough games. know Tampa is, you know, kind of going the other direction lately, but we know
Tim Wood (12:00)
Right.
Chris (12:28)
Tim, what do you expect out of these three games?
Tim Wood (12:30)
I think they're gonna get their ass kicked tomorrow Then come back when in overtime on Thursday And then absolutely kick the shit out of Tampa as a revenge game. So I think I go one one-on-one And it's gonna be looking pretty bleak after tomorrow
Chris (12:47)
How bad do think we're gonna lose tomorrow?
Tim Wood (12:50)
Like, 4151.
Chris (12:53)
Wow, that bad, huh?
Tim Wood (12:54)
Yeah, I Don't know I just it's just you know coming it like I said, know coming off that st. Jose game you know, we have a Look, I were winning with McDermott in the lineup But that fourth line is that just the way it's playing and the way they're managing the minutes It's just not a sustainable model like you need to be able to play for them for lines Like was our passion those guys were up over ten minutes a night, know Now you're you know, you see Jack Brad Nico all their ice time is creeping up above 20 minutes.
Nico and his line has been kind of a little bit caved in over the past couple games. Like they haven't really been been all that great. So there are some concerning underlying trends. I think overall the team's going in the right direction. I just think walking into Florida into their building. I think they've won what like six or seven in a row. I actually looked it up, but you know, they're 12 and three or something like that. Like I just this has disaster written all over it, which means the Devils are probably gonna play great and get a shout out. So
Chris (13:51)
Hahaha!
Bobby (13:51)
Yeah, it seems like we're not allowed to have Nico and Jax lines both going at the same time. It's just not part of the devil's plan for this year. One line just scores all week and then the next one picks up.
Tim Wood (13:59)
Right. Well, I do.
Chris (14:03)
Flyers managed to score on the Sharks today, I'm just saying.
Tim Wood (14:05)
Well, you know that that tweet that I say you guys a screenshot of you know of I think Nico is kind of getting a little bit of hard mash against some top line centers You know and Leon had zero points Pederson had zero points Azuki had zero points Tate Thompson zero points Clayton Keller zero points all kind of mash up against Nico so There is an element of that and it's just not you know, he's Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He's like, all right my heart
Bobby (14:06)
that's great.
He's doing the other job. Yeah, he's doing the other job. That's fine. Yeah.
Tim Wood (14:35)
My hard candidacy is over, I'm gonna go focus on the selkie.
Bobby (14:38)
Right, yeah, there you go.
Chris (14:38)
Jack Jack's going for both look out
Bobby (14:42)
It's nice seeing him out on that kill again, That was pretty interesting. Him and Brat were really knocking that puck around.
Chris (14:48)
I tell you, I really like how I should say Sheldon Keefe is coaching this team. I really like that he has, first of all, I love the fact that, and this is new for us being three years with Lindy Ruff, we actually have set lines. Other than when certain dudes have to be out for a penalty kill or a power play or whatever, he doesn't fuck with those lines, he doesn't juggle them.
He believes in the lines he has out there and he's letting him develop chemistry, which I really like. I also like the fact that he is putting Jack in kind of positions that maybe before this year would make Jack be a little uncomfortable. But the way that you become one of the best players in the, not just hockey players, best at anything is putting yourself in uncomfortable situations. And you learn to play that way and look at his face-offs.
they've been we said it for years on this show jack at some point will be one of the best face off guys in the league he's just that kind of player like if this is something i'm not good at i'm going to practice until and he has all the natural ability all the god given ability to do whatever the hell you want so you see his face off now he's getting much more comfortable winning some big face off and now playing defense like that was something lindy rough never would have done with jack
And we saw it a little bit with Bratt last year. We'd have him out on the penalty kill like the second unit. But he's becoming a solid penalty killer for us. He's throwing Jack out in a minute left down or up a goal to defend. This is not shit that we saw out of Jack Hughes. And Jack is just coming through a flying color. So I really like Sheldon Keefe's kind of trust in the whole team.
Tim Wood (16:41)
Mm-hmm.
Chris (16:42)
You know, they even talked about it a little bit in the broadcast when I believe it was Celebrini's line came on, McDermott's line was out there. McDermott went to get off the ice right away and Keefe told him, no, no, no, stay, stay. Like you can defend these guys. it's, you know, go and play with your line mates. We don't have to juggle like this. I trust a lot of all these guys and it worked. It's worked. And this confidence is kind of
Tim Wood (16:59)
Yeah, I remember them saying that.
Bobby (17:00)
that's good, yeah.
Chris (17:12)
that he's given these guys you can tell they're taking the responsibility and they're there you know elevating their game because of it and i really am happy with shelton keith and i still feel even after lost yesterday that they are this close away to poppin i really believe it
Bobby (17:30)
Yeah, I agree and I'm with you that I really have liked what he's done as a coach. Like you said, consistent lines to me is huge. With the exception yesterday, when you're really trying to get that one goal, they do what a lot of people were saying they should do, right? They put Heesher with Hughes and Bratt for a few shifts, just try to get something going. But otherwise, it's been very consistent. And then I saw some kind of stat after the Islander game, maybe one of you guys saw too, can help. Keefe's like second in the league or coaching maybe all time or something for comeback wins.
or game time wins when they're, yeah, in the hundreds, like his teams don't give up, you know? And so that's definitely a testament to him. He's had some skilled teams, obviously, and some really great forwards like in Toronto, but still, I mean, to have that many to be like second was quite impressive. So still very happy with him. And I agree, dude, like, I know it looks hard now because we just lost to San Jose, we got the champs and then we got Tampa and then Carolina, but I just feel like they're ready to pop too.
Tim Wood (17:59)
I saw that, yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Bobby (18:26)
You know, I joke about the four game winning streak. It's probably not coming this week, but it's definitely going to come.
Tim Wood (18:27)
Yeah.
As long as they stay above 600 which is I think a 98 point pace that is firmly in the playoffs and if you look at The top four and point percentage, you know caps Rangers Carolina and us the teams below us fucking suck and even in the Atlanta even in the Atlantic Division if they stay above that 600 They'll be they'll be cruising into the playoffs. I firmly believe that one thing I wanted to mention about Jack is when he's really going he is he's just a ninja with his stick defensively like
Chris (18:36)
Yeah.
Yeah, they're not going to be there.
Tim Wood (19:00)
The amount of times he can just pick pocket at the fence and he did it against He did it against san jose when he's not looking his stick is actually oddly long for a guy his size And he just it's just a I don't know. It's just so precise with it. so that's just amazing So I think that it's a great idea to get him in the penalty kill some of that could be because Lazar and bastion are hurt and they're not throwing mcdermott out on the kill They're probably not totally trusting Dowling. I don't think tatara's like a big big pk guy. So
There could be some of that at play, but yeah, he's coming up when his number's called. He's delivering, so it's pretty impressive.
Chris (19:40)
And I honestly think that they can go down to Florida and win these next three. I really do. And how much does that change, not just the narrative around this team right now, because when they're talking to Metro and any of the national media, I see it's the Rangers and it's Carolina and everybody loves what Washington's doing. And yeah, of course, the devils will be there. Dare that afterthought.
Yeah, the Devils are even like when they break down games on the NHL Network It's like the devil games are rarely talked about it's just kind of like yeah, the Devils beat whoever blah blah blah We're gonna move on or the Devils lost or whatever and they just move on And because I just think that a lot of I think a lot of the national media knows that this team's a lot better They're gonna make the playoffs But they also trusted this team way too much last year and I think a lot of these guys got burned Because I was listening to the guys saying yeah, but the Devils are
you know they're still gonna turn it on right they're still gonna be there that was like in january and you know we were over here going no no that's not happening they're not making the playoffs
Tim Wood (20:42)
Yeah, I thought they were going to up until the day they were eliminated. I was like, how can this happen? I don't understand. you know, yeah, I was, you know, I was totally red-pilled on denial.
Chris (20:55)
Yeah, I'm still going through that on something else. I'm just, what, yeah. How did this happen?
Tim Wood (20:57)
Well, think there's some of that. I think, yeah, I know, right? It didn't happen, no, it's next week. I think there's some of that residual kind of anxiety about last season that's lingering in this fan base. And that's why we're not quite there yet trusting this team to be able to kind of, they're not looking at all this stuff and kind of more people that just like to watch the game. like, they're kind of winning two and losing two and winning two and then winning three.
Chris (21:07)
Right.
Tim Wood (21:27)
So I could see that, see that happening. One other thing I wanted to mention about keeps coaching. actually have in my extensive notes over here, the top one is something I did. I wrote a bunch of shit down. can't, I can't read any of it. I'm just like, I'm like, I'm like worse than a doctor. Yeah. So one thing I noticed,
Bobby (21:36)
He's prepared.
Chris (21:41)
The floor is
Bobby (21:44)
I have that same problem.
I write in the dark watching the game, like not even looking at my pad, I'm just kind of scratching.
Chris (21:54)
I love doing that.
Tim Wood (21:55)
The Islanders play a trap against Calgary. And this kind of happened all last year under Lindy, is he refused to change the play style and that speed transition game was getting shut down in the neutral zone. was like sticking a square peg in a round hole. just wasn't working, it wasn't working, it wasn't working, it was frustrating. And that happened against Calgary a little bit, I think. They got clogged up in the neutral zone and that's why they weren't really generating anything. The Islanders play a pretty
pretty successful trap as well and they need to because you know they're down to like their last four guys but one thing I noticed is that they're they're regrouping in the neutral zone a lot more so like Jack will push the puck and realize like it's not there he'll send it back to the D the forwards will regroup and then they'll take another shot at it and then that's leading to two things is better better transition games to the neutral zone but it's also and Sal actually
I a graphic last night about the volume of dump-ins that they're doing. And these dump-ins now are a lot more strategic. It's not just throwing the puck in to throw the puck in. Like if you're, you know, Dylan throwing the puck to wrap it all the way around because he sees Mercer flying down the right wing boards. You know, they're kind of looped it a couple of times where he tossed it into the far corner because Nico had to step on his guy on the far board. So it's a lot, it's a little bit different, but those things can go a long way. But so,
Chris (23:05)
Right?
Tim Wood (23:16)
The regrouping is something I've noticed a lot where they'll bring it back, they'll settle it down, they'll slow it down. That gives the forwards time to get back into their lanes, readjust their routes that they're gonna take and kind of, if you push the defense back and then come back, kind of makes them lose their gaps, which is what defense try to keep is a good gap control between defensemen and forwards. So that's something coaching wise that I've noticed.
Chris (23:40)
And that's something that I, and that you're right. And that's something that last night they were trying to do. it, but it seemed to me like San Jose, just, they were not giving you any space. They were on top of whoever had that puck. They were putting one guy into four check and they're a young fast team. And you know, it's like you say, like, you know, we play a, Islander team. You might be able to wear them down the third period.
I just don't know how much you're wearing down that young shark team that's just kind of full of piss and vinegar right now. you know, look, if it wasn't against the Devils, I'd be extremely happy with what the Sharks did the other night because I don't hate the Sharks and I like that team. I do have a couple of things though I have to notice. What's the name of the coach of the Sharks? Who's the head coach? Is that it? Mike Wazowski. Mike Wazowski!
Tim Wood (24:26)
Warsaw ski or Warsaw ski, I Mike was asked
Yeah.
Chris (24:34)
Whatever his name is, we'll call him Mike Wazowski, the head coach of the San Jose Sharks. Bro, watch this show and look at two out of three people here. You gotta let it go, dude. He's gotta shave the head. It looks so fucking bad. It resembles a baboon's ass and he really needs to just shave it down. Now,
Bobby (24:48)
That's it, Let it go.
Chris (25:00)
Since I'm putting on my fashion police badge, I will go one more and throw a little shade towards our captain. The mustache is no good. Like this fucking mustache has got to go. Like I don't know who I'm... is that it? It's Movember. People still do that shit.
Tim Wood (25:03)
you
Bobby (25:09)
It's Movember, dude. You just gotta hold. It's Movember.
Tim Wood (25:13)
It's Movember. Yeah.
And judging by some of the fanbase, there's a certain population of our fanbase that certainly enjoys the mustache on Nico. So I'm not gonna judge. That is a handsome motherfucker. Now he's got the mustache. Now he looks like a cop on Ventura Boulevard.
Chris (25:27)
Yeah?
I don't like the mustache.
Bobby (25:31)
Was. Now he's got the mustache.
Chris (25:37)
Yeah, exactly. He does. He looks like a cop on Ventura Boulevard or a porn star. Either one. I'm not a fan.
Bobby (25:37)
Yeah, does. Yeah. Yeah.
I'm not a fan of like the mustache in general like just as a standalone piece. It's either beard goatee I can't like the mustache thing just never works. can get you get some pretty cool ones
Chris (25:52)
It depends on the mustache. if, you know, I had the handlebars going a couple of years ago, Tony had grown his where he had to like just a kind of the Fu Manchu. I dig that. That looks cool. Yeah.
Bobby (25:57)
Yeah.
Tim Wood (26:02)
I didn't really. Alright.
Bobby (26:02)
Right. See, to me, that's beyond the most. See, I'm getting all that. The straight lip just above like, you know, nothing coming down, nothing crowing up. Those, just, yeah, it just doesn't, you know.
Chris (26:08)
Yeah, an eyebrow that came down for a drink, that kind of thing. Yeah. I'm with you.
Tim Wood (26:12)
Yeah, like Philip Forsberger on Nashville. mean, that thing's like, know, like Raleigh Fingers. Like, that's a mustache. saw, so I don't know if it's real or not. I saw a picture of Patrick Lane's character, Patrick Lyonay's character, sorry, in the new NHL video game. A little Hitler stash. was like, yeah, I was like, what is this? What's happening here? It's like.
Chris (26:16)
Okay, that's a fucking mustache. Yeah.
Bobby (26:34)
yeah?
Chris (26:34)
Really?
Yeah, I don't know. You shouldn't, I think, set him into video game form with the Hitler mustache. At least in real life you could just shave it. But I have seen more and more people, men, with the Hitler mustache going. Like, I don't know if that's just a weak hair growth or just if it's, I don't know, make it a comeback. I just think there's certain things that maybe should never make a comeback.
Bobby (26:43)
Right, hopefully a glitch.
Tim Wood (26:44)
No!
Bobby (27:00)
It's been long enough, I just want to wear it.
Tim Wood (27:04)
That's... yeah.
Chris (27:04)
Right, the Hitler mustache or anyone whose last name might be Hitler, you know, I think you automatically change that shit. you just, you know, you don't name your child Adolf, you don't grow the mustache. It's just kind of normal practice. Right.
Tim Wood (27:12)
You
Bobby (27:15)
Right. Yeah. It's just, it's just the way it's forever now. Like, sorry, you should have, you should have got the memo. It's never coming back.
Tim Wood (27:16)
No you don't.
Yeah, it's just like, I'm a big believer that every company that does anything that's in the public realm should have like a chief degenerate officer that like looks at their advertising, looks at their ad copy, looks at everything that they put out publicly. He's like, nope, can't do that. That looks like a dick. That can't be our ad. You know, or like, nope, you can't say that because that's kind of rapey. Or you know what I mean? It's like, I would be great at that job.
Bobby (27:38)
Yes.
Chris (27:39)
Hahaha
I unfortunately the way things are going to end up over the course of the next bunch of years it'll be the complete opposite. Not rapey enough. This is not enough dick jokes in this one. I don't think we've offended everybody in this commercial yet. Let's push a little forward here. Yeah, right? He's the new spokesperson of the NHL.
Tim Wood (27:53)
yeah. No. no.
Bobby (27:58)
Tick it up!
Tim Wood (28:01)
No, I don't. What's Mike McCloud doing?
Bobby (28:08)
haha
Tim Wood (28:10)
Exactly. Alright. Yeah, exactly. It's a new assistant coach of... Man.
Chris (28:13)
No, the PWHL. That's where we're putting McLeod.
So what do you guys think of the jerseys for the PWHL? Has everybody seen them?
Tim Wood (28:25)
Yeah, I will-
Bobby (28:26)
did see them when they came out and I remember liking them I think but I don't remember them now.
Tim Wood (28:31)
I like them. like the Montreal ones awesome. I think they did an incredible job with all their branding just sick. New York one like what are you doing? Like that the sirens I thought it I thought because at the time they're playing I think in like Bridgeport, Connecticut. So I thought it was gonna be like a Long Island Sound thing, you know with like the sirens in the in the water, you know luring men to their demise, but no it's like horns and sirens like that's what you're identifying with New York like
Chris (28:40)
Yeah, it's garbage.
Right.
No, yeah, I would have gone the other way. I would have thought that the sirens, yeah.
Tim Wood (29:02)
Yeah, it just makes no sense. the audible one kind of sucks. It's sort of like discount Cleveland, Cleveland Cavaliers or sorry nodes. and, the Minnesota ones. All right. I just feel like, I feel like F is a weird letter to do a logo with. yeah, it's good.
Chris (29:08)
the charge yeah
I don't...
I like that jersey though. That and the Montreal are my two favorite ones. I like the colors in the Minnesota one, but you're right, like having just the F is a little, you know, we're female, you know? There you go.
Tim Wood (29:24)
Yeah.
Fuck it. Fuck you. It's I you know, I think when they have on the jerseys now with their whole color schemes that they did a really good job and you know Look with their their leagues out there that put up some of the trashiest City Connect jerseys So relative to some other products that went out there that I think they did a pretty good job
Bobby (29:30)
Hahaha
Chris (29:50)
Now Tim, who do you think has the best full uniforms in the NHL? You can use any variation like, you know, the stadium series look for the Devils. know for me that's definitely up there, like, so any variation of future or I mean a future of past or present teams.
Tim Wood (30:05)
I am over
That's like 900 options.
Chris (30:12)
Yes, the 1979 Oakland Golden Seal away jersey was the best.
Tim Wood (30:14)
The I you know what I loved is the The Devil's retro Kansas City's jerseys the kind of yellow red. I really just like that color combination Obviously the Christmas retros are gorgeous for them. Love the Blackhawks logo. Sorry, you know, send me to you know, wherever I don't care I do like the two-tone red wings red and white
Chris (30:25)
Mm-hmm.
Tim Wood (30:42)
Rangers are stupid. Fuck them. A lot of people like the capital screaming eagle jersey. I hate them. think that I thought I think that they fucking suck. Those Florida with like the palm tree ones those I like those I like you know, anytime you know, I liked how they leaned into the sort of the Miami viceness of Florida. I thought that was a pretty good move. I'm not a designer. like
Bobby (30:48)
I'm not a fan of that.
Chris (30:56)
You like that one?
Yeah.
Tim Wood (31:08)
You know, I'm not gonna shit on somebody's work to be like, be like, I think these are awful. It's like, like move on, you know?
Chris (31:16)
I only saw them wear them once, but the ducks wore, I think it was the opener, their home opener last year, their all purple jersey with the circle logo and it had the duck in the middle, said Anaheim ducks inside the circle and it was that uniform was awesome. Like I said, I think I only saw them wear it once. The other one I really like, anything San Jose wears, I think they just always look like a million bucks, but the all black looks awesome.
And I'm a big fan of the Minnesota Wild. They're away stuff. just, think they look awesome. I like the green. I like the whole logo. I like everything about them, but my favorite, and I said it last year, think we all did that the stadium series look for the devils. That should be their, that should be their jerseys. That should be their uniforms.
Tim Wood (32:01)
Yep. That should be their alternate. Yeah, I think that the rule with alternate jerseys is that they're in three-year cycles. So this is the last year of the jersey jersey. I'm pretty certain that's the rule. So hopefully that stadium series will become a new alternate, but they'll probably let Bradore design some other... something else. I will kill one jersey. The Los Angeles Kings outdoor game jerseys from like, I don't know, maybe 10 years ago were fucking atrocious.
Chris (32:10)
Okay.
Bobby (32:19)
You
Chris (32:20)
Right, it'll say just new on it.
Bobby (32:25)
Shit.
Tim Wood (32:31)
But other than that, they're awful. They're like very 80s, like with like the LA would like,
Chris (32:31)
I don't know if I remember those.
Okay, yes, know the ones you're talking about.
Tim Wood (32:38)
They're all, they're just terrible looking. So I will shit on one of them.
Chris (32:43)
Have we worn our Jersey jerseys yet this year?
Tim Wood (32:46)
I don't think so.
Chris (32:49)
Bob? You don't know? What jerseys do you like, Bob?
Bobby (32:49)
I thought they did actually. I thought so, but we don't need to hang up on that, I guess. I think we went through this before. I like some of the classics. I'm with Tim. I do like the Blackhawks jersey. I'm a big fan of the Krakens look and Utah's color set. think Utah's color set is actually really cool, whatever their name is going to wind up being. They just look really good. Obviously, the Devils.
Tim Wood (32:52)
Duh-duh.
Chris (33:11)
Yeah is.
Bobby (33:17)
set in itself is great. think it's one of the best logos in sports, but specifically like you guys, that Stadium Series jersey, that whole look was just incredible. definitely go for that. And oddly enough, this one's so plain in the Rangers vein, but one of the Colorado dark jerseys is just Colorado cross, but the laces and everything, just the way the colors and everything works, just really sharp to me. But I hate like the Rangers, just of like a sellout kind of thing for me. But in Colorado it works.
Chris (33:40)
Dear
Coyote's had a really cool one, the maroon one that just said Arizona, think going across the same way. That was a really sharp jersey too. Yeah.
Bobby (33:49)
Yeah. Sometimes they're just classically simple, you know, and the color palette just really works. So.
Tim Wood (33:55)
Yep, yep.
Chris (33:56)
I thought that when we did the retro reverse or any other type of third Jersey, I always thought the avalanche where it is are the old Colorado Rocky jerseys. Like we should be wearing them, not them, you know, and you see them and they wear them sometimes and I think they look awesome. I'm like, why is that there? Like just because it was in Colorado. Like that's our team. Like did we leave? Yeah, it's not their franchise.
Bobby (34:11)
right i should be wearing quebec shit
not their franchise. Right.
Tim Wood (34:21)
That's... st- valor.
Bobby (34:24)
Yeah.
Chris (34:24)
Yeah, Stalin, Valor like Tim walls. How do we?
Tim Wood (34:26)
Well, I think you know what? Maybe I was wrong about the Kansas City colors, but, but...
Chris (34:32)
Go ahead.
Tim Wood (34:39)
I don't
Chris (34:42)
You said about the Kansas City Jerseys.
Tim Wood (34:45)
I think the Colorado colors is what I was talking about on the Jebals, the one alternate that they have. the Kansas City, colors the same? I forget.
Chris (34:52)
On the re- yeah the retro reverse.
Bobby (34:58)
It was more yeah, I think there's more of throwback to Kansas City with the yellow on it and everything right? Yeah, my kid got me one so yeah, yeah.
Chris (34:58)
I think that they-
Tim Wood (35:00)
Was it? Yeah, yeah, really? Yeah, I just like you said, like probably said, it's like just like the palette is what I enjoy the colors game.
Chris (35:02)
Yeah, that had the yellow in it. That was Kansas City.
Bobby (35:11)
You know, it's funny, like when I became a Devils fan, was basically the first year that they went to, know, the black and red without the green. And as a new fan from that moment forward, I remember looking back at old clips with like the green and I hated it. I'm like, I'm so glad I became a Devils fan when they got rid of the green. And then after being a Devils fan for years and years, now any Jersey, they come out with any green on it. I absolutely love, like I love the actual green. They wore for one of the, not the winter classic, but,
Chris (35:13)
Yeah.
Tim Wood (35:34)
Yeah
Bobby (35:40)
Remember that other outdoor game, the heritage classes against the Rangers? That was gorgeous. Like I love it. So now I'm about now I'm all about any time they put like the green in there, which is weird because I just, hated it for some reason, specifically the whites with the green, you know, pre 92. but now I like it all.
Chris (35:40)
The Heritage Classic. The Heritage Classic. Yeah.
Tim Wood (35:41)
The Yankee Stadium one,
Yeah, but I because if you watch like the clips the 80s of those guys in those colors That's when the team was so bad and it's almost kind of like a clownish kind of color combination when you're so bad Then they moved to the black but now that they're actually a decent team and have three cups under their belt now It's like now it's like kind of retroactively cool I was at I was at that that doubles game at Yankee Stadium and it was Probably I think it was zero degrees. It was so fucking cold
Chris (35:56)
Well, I mean...
Ready?
Bobby (36:14)
Yeah, exactly.
Tim Wood (36:22)
I couldn't make it the whole way. had like eight beers. I was like, this is doing nothing for me at
Bobby (36:27)
Yeah, that's rough,
Chris (36:27)
Wow. And we lost that one bad, didn't we? Yeah, it was bad.
Tim Wood (36:31)
Yeah, well, it wasn't a good game. Yeah, I remember we had the other problem. We had to wait for like two or three hours for the game to start because there's a glare issue that someone didn't think of.
Bobby (36:31)
4-1 or something?
the sun? Yeah.
Yeah, I think we even maybe scored first, right? And then just got like they scored the next four or five or something like that.
Chris (36:46)
Wait.
Tim Wood (36:49)
Yeah. Yeah.
Chris (36:52)
Stupid son. I mean, it's not like it's always up there at stupid Yankee Stadium, you know
Bobby (36:53)
Yeah, damn it. Stupid Yankee Stadium.
Tim Wood (36:53)
huh. goes to sleep at night.
Bobby (36:59)
No, that was iconic. game, that was a beautiful looking game, man. I mean, come on, Yankee Stadium, playing out there on the ice. That was awesome.
Tim Wood (37:04)
That was cool. It was really cool to be there. But like, it's just, couldn't, I just couldn't get over. I was wearing like six layers, man. It was, it was really cool.
Bobby (37:09)
Yeah, I mean I'm a Mets fan, but you can't compete with like the tradition that is Yankee. You know what mean? I mean, that's that's pretty pretty awesome.
Tim Wood (37:15)
Bye now.
Chris (37:15)
I and we all are old enough to remember the times back when we first started watching. The whites were the home jerseys. only wore the colors when they were out on the road.
Bobby (37:23)
Right.
Tim Wood (37:26)
Yep. When did they switch that? I don't know when.
Bobby (37:26)
So little known fact, apparently, right after the first lockout, right after the full year lockout.
Chris (37:32)
So what's now?
Tim Wood (37:34)
Was it? Okay.
Chris (37:36)
2006.
Bobby (37:37)
Yeah. So we miss five, right? No, we missed five. Yeah. five. Yeah. yeah, it was right after that. then, so apparently the AHL, I believe still uses whites as their home because in our middle school league, we're getting all crossed up because we got home and away sets. So we just bring both our jerseys everywhere because you never really know what you're going to get. And I was all preparing to put like the dark side because I've just assumed everybody.
Chris (37:40)
Yeah. I thought we missed... five we missed, yeah.
Tim Wood (37:57)
Yeah, don't don't
Bobby (38:03)
is dark for home now. they're like, nope, not in this league. We follow the AHL. I'm like, the AHL doesn't do it? I gotta watch them wear AHL. Why don't they do it?
Chris (38:08)
Hahaha
Tim Wood (38:10)
What what why are you what of all the leaks very like yeah, we're doing what the aHL does
Bobby (38:15)
I'm like, why don't we do what the NHL does? Just a suggestion, know, highest league in the world.
Chris (38:17)
Wait.
Tim Wood (38:21)
Do what I would love to see the Devils do and Utica does it? Black. Black as the base color jersey, black pants, black socks, black helmet with the red logo. I think that would be baller.
Chris (38:34)
Yeah, and we've talked about it for years, always wanting a black jersey. And then when we finally got one, it was a stupid Jersey Jersey. Yeah. So I, when we were going through that little rough patch and I think Bobby, was that you that put the bag on X, you put a picture of a, you know, a paper bag with the holes cut out in the eyes and you wrote too soon.
Bobby (38:50)
Yeah, yeah.
Chris (38:57)
and somebody sent it back with it saying bag across the top. I thought that was fucking great. Whoever did that, that was so friggin funny. Alright, commercial time. Bobby (42:12)
I that was an appropriate game time. Maybe I need to put it in all caps to remind me to yell it.
Chris (42:14)
That was most fun.
That was good.
Bobby (42:20)
You
Hahahaha
Chris (42:28)

I need to I definitely need to look cooler so I might have to look into these. Something's got to fix this.

Yes, you do.
Tim Wood (44:14)
Yeah, those plain white headphones are just not cutting it for you,
Bobby (44:18)

Chris check it out, think we got ourselves some more frozen wood. Wait, he's moving again.
Chris (45:05)
yeah, he is frozen. God damn it. he's back. We can hear you.
Tim Wood (45:06)
Yeah, yeah, you guys froze. I'm back, I'm back. I just like...
Bobby (45:07)
There he is.
Do you ever notice how silly people look when they freeze? Like there's just, there's not a single way you can look attractive when you freeze.
Chris (45:13)
So is this...
Tim Wood (45:19)
I'm out.
Chris (45:19)
It never freezes in a cool position. you always look like a fucking reject.
Tim Wood (45:23)
Well, Chris looks like he's like in witness protection the entire time we're filming these.
Bobby (45:28)
Well hold on here because I'm dealing from a major point of disadvantage because you're both blurry Usually it's just Chris I cannot pick up on the symbols at all as to when to jump into a conversation here You guys are just like muddled little blurs
Tim Wood (45:32)
really?
Chris (45:33)
Yeah
Tim Wood (45:39)
That's that's actually what I really look like I'm just
Chris (45:40)
Now is that your connection? Cause I'm clear. I'm perfectly clear. I just right now I'm, I'm perfectly clear. I'm talking like 4k, 10 AP bullshit right here. I look awesome. And you, you look like I've actually found an older PC today in one of the Christmas boxes. And I was like, I wonder if this would work. So I charged it up.
Bobby (45:44)
I'm clear, Tim's now clear, but you are always fuzzy online.
That's extremely clear. I didn't know you can get that on a PC from 2002.
Tim Wood (46:00)
You
Chris (46:08)
And then it took me about a half an hour to remember my password, because I'm like, this was like literally 12. Like I had this place. I had this PC when I bought it, when I got that at the bar. So that's how long ago this was. Right. So I was like, all right. I fucking remembered the password and I get in and I have to update everything, reset it to factory settings and all this stuff. So I'm like, let me go on the riverside and just see if this thing would record at all. And it threw me off the minute I got on.
Tim Wood (46:34)
No.
Chris (46:37)
I was like, alright, this is maybe good to watch Netflix on. That's about it.
Bobby (46:41)
Yeah, considering I had to upgrade my computer for the last pod and the computer's only four years old just to do Riverside, you're definitely not going to get it on a PC that's that old.
Tim Wood (46:50)
That's how they get you. That's how they get you.
Chris (46:51)
god, what a piece of shit. So is it your connection, Tim? The fact that you live in East Bubblefuck over there?
Bobby (46:52)
That is.
Tim Wood (46:56)
Yeah, yeah, honestly, I you know, I would suspect it might be I literally my you know, this is my brother's house. We just got Wi Fi like two years ago before yeah, and before I had to use my phone hotspot as like Verizon, but Yeah, it's I mean it probably is it looks like I'm getting I'm down a bar on my computer, but
Chris (47:09)
Hey, welcome to the 21st century.
Bobby (47:21)
Listen to our listeners, we've been promising this, we're gonna work on the production. He says for three straight years, this is gonna happen, we're gonna clean this shit up at some point.
Chris (47:31)
Yeah, I mean, there's gotta be a way. Maybe it's Riverside. Maybe we need to go to another, I mean, we don't have to have this on-air production meeting right now, so... I mean, Yeah, you better watch your shit. yeah, I mean, maybe... Maybe Stream... Maybe StreamYard is the way to go. Hey, we get our revenue no matter who we record on. You know? We get our 35 cents a quarter.
Bobby (47:39)
No, probably not.
Tim Wood (47:40)
No, no, no, but you hear that Riverside? You better watch your back.
Bobby (47:46)
We're taking our revenue with us.
Tim Wood (47:52)
Yeah, maybe.
Bobby (47:52)
Maybe.
Right, pubwiga.
Right, but Riverside ain't gonna get our 35 cents a quarter if they keep it up. There you go.
Chris (48:02)
No, no, they took our they took their money for the year. So we should probably be stuck with them until at least September. But yeah, so
Bobby (48:05)
I guess we're sticking it out for a while. So to our fans, we'll work on production in year four.
Tim Wood (48:06)
haha
Chris (48:11)
Yeah, you know what though they do like to listen. I've got a bunch of nice emails from some listeners just this week. You know saying that they enjoy the show want stickers. One of our listeners down in Florida. I had asked him if he was going to be able to make any of the games he said. Unfortunately not for work, but he can't get there, but that would definitely be a fun couple of games. We will have an uncle pucker on the ground for Saturday night in Tampa. Tony is at that will be at that game and he said.
We have to go on like few minutes before the end of the game because he's gonna call in. So he'll call in and yeah, let us know what's going on from Amelie Arena, hopefully after a big fat devil win.
Tim Wood (48:47)
Alright.
Yeah, they need that. They need that revenge game. Hopefully none of the listeners are like, this new guy fucking sucks.
Bobby (48:57)
would be great.
Chris (49:03)
He can't even get his connection right.
Bobby (49:03)
Nah. Yeah, I mean.
Tim Wood (49:05)
I can't even fucking hear this guy.
Bobby (49:08)
I don't think that's going to happen given the other two hosts that are always here sometimes.
Chris (49:08)
He looks
Tim Wood (49:09)
Yeah.
Chris (49:12)
And believe it or not, you'll sound fine on the Finnish podcast. It's just, yeah, you'll sound fine, which is strange. I don't know how technology works sometimes, but it's an amazing thing. So what do you think, Markstrom, all three games? You give an owl in a game here?
Bobby (49:28)
Funny you should bring it up because I was actually gonna ask you who should actually be our starter right now. I Don't know is Alan out playing Marks room or is this just like an unlucky kind of thing?
Chris (49:40)
Alright, I will say what I think and then Tim, I'd love to hear from you on this because I will say to your first or last question first, yes, Jake Allen is outplaying Jacob Markstrom, but I think that's because we are using Jake Allen sparingly. I think if you gave Jake Allen Jacob Markstrom's workload, he wouldn't look like this Jake Allen. That's my opinion. What do you think, Tim?
Tim Wood (50:02)
Hang on one second. I'm one to look at their stats. I did see something where You take that Tampa game out of Alan sample and his save percentage is above 950 Yeah, so Yeah, it's it's I think it's 914 Yeah, there was a four in there. There's a four in there. Yeah Yeah, but nine you take that game out, but that's kind of like the
Chris (50:16)
Holy shit.
Bobby (50:17)
think he's like 940 with it, isn't he?
914, okay. I knew there was a four in there, yeah, yeah.
Chris (50:26)
And 940 is crazy.
Tim Wood (50:30)
how crazy kind of early season sample sizes are. Yeah, mean, Markstrom has played 12 games, Allen six, so they're really kind of firmly leaning into Markstrom as the number one. think Markstrom goes the first game, then you don't put Allen out there against Tampa. So I think they go Markstrom, Markstrom, Allen, Markstrom.
Chris (50:46)
No.
Yeah, I think that that works.
Tim Wood (50:51)
I think we're going to continue to see the two to one thing. There's also, think, a contract clause for Allen where if he plays above 40 games or something like that. Yeah, basically, So Fitz is like, So I think they're going to continue rolling like that. I think goaltending in general, and I saw this somewhere out a couple of days ago. It's probably kind of constantly changing. But I think for the first time in a while, league average save percentage was below 900.
Chris (51:01)
so he's going to get 39. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. I sense like the dead puck error.
Tim Wood (51:21)
And yeah, and it's, it's wild, you know, because I think a lot of fans need to really reset kind of their expectations on what actually makes kind of a good goalie from, you're looking at just like, say, percentage, like Marksman was at a nine out two, that's like anything above 900 now is pretty good or above average. You know, it's very, yeah, very rarely, very rarely are you going to see a guy that's nine 20, nine 30, like, like we used to, it just doesn't happen anymore.
Bobby (51:23)
What a different world, yeah.
Chris (51:42)
Yeah, you're above league average. You're alright.
Tim Wood (51:51)
You know that the game is swung so far towards offense and shooters like you know some of these fourth liners You know with a stick technology and just the way that that you know specialized skill training happens with kids These guys can just shoot so well Every single scrub on every team can can just pick the corners on you And I think Markstrom has a vulnerability underneath his glove hands. That's like three or four that have gone under
Chris (52:21)
Right in between, like underneath his elbow, yep.
Tim Wood (52:21)
Yeah, under his glove. Yeah, and his reputation coming from Vancouver and Calgary were that he is prone to a softy earlier in the game. But like I said, he's locking down games when we need him to in the third.
Bobby (52:21)
Yeah.
Chris (52:36)
So who do you think is playing better right now, Tim?
Tim Wood (52:40)
I Alan's playing better. I mean, his just generally. But again, he's only played six games. So is that if he could...
Chris (52:46)
Do you think Alan can maintain the way he's playing if he had the amount of starts that Markstrom has? Yeah, okay.
Tim Wood (52:55)
No, no, and there's also, you I assume, you know, that there's also circumstantial stuff like, you know, the types of games and when you're coming off and, when was the last time you played and how the team plays in front of how the team plays in front of them, you know, do they do they take a better, more defensive posture, you know, or are they feeling a little bit more confident when when they're in front of you and kind of be a play a little bit more freewheeling of a style. So I think all that kind of goes into it. But right now, Allen's Allen's been better, but
Chris (53:08)
Bye.
Tim Wood (53:24)
Again, it's limited, limited, Sam.
Chris (53:27)
What do you think, Bob?
Bobby (53:29)
Listen, I'm just going with the eye test, right? It's just one of those things where you're just feeling like right now, Alan is seeing it little better. And if the team's really trying to sell us on this one A, one B situation, if you have a hotter goalie, then the ideology behind that would be that you would ride them a little more. But everything that Tim just mentioned makes absolute sense. All the schedule, the timing. I still say Markstrom's our guy and I let him roll with this two to one scenario in games played. So he's still our main starter.
Chris (53:52)
Devils?
Bobby (53:59)
for now.
Chris (53:59)
Devils have allowed six goals in their last five games. mean, that's a little crazy. Yeah, you know, I mean, that's pretty sick. So I mean, the team in front of them, both guys are playing good, but the guys are making, each of them are making amazing saves when they have to. I mean, you, go ahead. No, no, no.
Bobby (54:04)
Yeah, that's very, very good.
Tim Wood (54:04)
That's very good.
Bobby (54:15)
You know what, for me, I'm go ahead, finish up. I'm not truly an analyst type of guy when I watch these things. I just see something and it sticks with me. And like Marksman, for example, like letting in the first goal or being prone to a softie, it does seem very repetitive. You know what I mean? So I'm watching, so I'm like, this is aggravating. I think it did in the Islander game too. I'm like, you got to stop that. And sure, they came back and win, so you forget about it. And
I was the first I just read that whole thing about just ... circuit and the goal against and had three games to get I'm ... all for that but it feels like it's happening all the time ... you know I mean is I don't always dive into the stats ... mostly not that heavily opinionated most of time so ... they have to leave the podcast doesn't work. No I don't like to be opinion I really don't it's just ... kind of comes with the job but it's just it's just the ... eye test you know I mean it's just a feeling I get right now that you know maybe at some point Alan gets a couple in a row.
Chris (54:50)
Yes.
Yeah, what the fuck are you talking about?
Tim Wood (54:58)
haha
Bobby (55:09)
But for the most part, I Marksman's are number one, you gotta ride them.
Chris (55:13)
I mean, I'll say this, I... Alan is completely surprising the hell out of me this year. Because I thought he played very good for us when he came in last year. He did have a couple of stinkers late in the year, but I think the whole team was just ready to go hit the Lynx. They didn't give a fuck. And so, I mean, I'm willing to throw all of his starts last year away. But I watched him a few games in Montreal the last couple of years, and he was not very good. So when we first got him, I was like, okay, great, there's the consolation prize. What do you fucking do?
I was happy with how he played. This year he has completely surprised me with how good he's playing. But again, I think more starts. Like you see it, yes, Alan, I mean Markstrom is prone to let the softie in once in a while, but Alan is prone occasionally to have just games where every time he touches the puck it's a fucking adventure. Every, know, he'll flop around, you know, and stuff and there's some getting a tample was probably the only game we saw him do that.
this year but I saw him quite a few before he got to the Devils having games like that and you know so I don't know like I'm shocked at how well he's playing and I give a ton of credit to the team in front of him but I mean I think yes Markstrom is the guy and having if Alan can keep just play every third game and play this well well I mean you got to be so comfortable going into the playoffs because yeah we have a goalie that lets in a softie a game as opposed to last year where we had goalies that let three or four softies in a game
Bobby (56:40)
Sure, and he's not going to do that all the time. And let me just rephrase this one more way. If it wasn't for this week coming up and the schedule, the way we laid it out, which is exactly why I agree it should be Markstrom Allen, Markstrom coming off of this game, the San Jose, even though it's a loss, that's one of those games where I say Allen deserves the next start. That's how well he played. You know what I mean? You do that sometimes. Like if your backup maybe gets a shutout or whatever, you just do it. It was that close to being a shutout. He was literally trying to will that team to win. So I would normally give him this next game.
Chris (56:58)
Okay.
Bobby (57:10)
But considering it's Florida Florida Tampa I would not now for that reason.
Tim Wood (57:14)
Yeah, mean, technically, mean, the sharks didn't score on them. And we could see that. could see Alan Marks from Marks from Alan Marks from Alan. I don't know.
Chris (57:18)
Yeah, yeah, it was a known goal.
Now, we did talk about what the narrative changes of the Devils. go 3-0, they get five out of these next six points. Well, how does the narrative change and what does it change to if they get no points, or they get one point? And what is the four in a row losing streak? Two to Florida, one to San Jose, one to Tampa.
How does that narrative turn if the devils just shit the bed down there?
Bobby (58:01)
Well, you're talking about that would be at the end of game 22. So the Devils would be 10, 10, and 2. Again, 500, which is where we were just a couple weeks ago when I was very concerned about that and gave them a C. So that would really suck and it would change a lot, but it's still something they can rebound from. This is a grueling week. Like it sucks that we lost San Jose to start it. But if they really lost two games to Florida and they weren't like disastrous blowouts, I mean,
Are you really going to you know, is the boat sinking? I don't know.
Chris (58:33)
It depends on the losses. All right. If this is a, know, they lose both games by a goal, maybe one loss in overtime, something like that. And you were, you, you hung with them and you know, that games, the games could have gone either way. Then no, I wouldn't be hair on fire, blow the whole thing up. if it's, you know, six to two, seven to one, and then we roll into Tampa and lose, you know, four to three. Yeah. Then had a hair on fire, but.
Bobby (59:01)
I'd be a little more concerned post your little four game losing streak because then we just got the arcades and the capitals and I just don't know what the hell would happen. Now you're talking about maybe being potentially being sub 500 or close at Thanksgiving, which is later this year. That would be pretty bad.
Chris (59:09)
Right.
I mean if they finish up after the capital game sub 500 then I think you really do have to put the worry hat on that this team just might not be there yet. So Tim, what do you think?
Tim Wood (59:31)
Yeah, I agree with that. actually, I didn't realize this. So Florida's eight one and one in their last time and they've won seven in a row. The interesting thing though is they've given up 46 goals in 15 games, which is a lot. I don't know what the goals per game against is. And we've given up 49 and 18 games. So they're not exactly keeping the puck out of their net at an elite rate. They are scoring a shitload of goals.
Chris (59:38)
That's it.
Tim Wood (59:59)
And their goal differential is a plus 12. Ours is a plus 13. So like I said, if they keep this points percentage above 600, that's, you I realize that's just kind of oddly, you know, hoping they stay afloat. But this week, you know, this is a tough week. know, whoever makes the fucking schedule at the league for the Devils, fuck that guy. Because last year with all the back to backs and then.
Like sending us to Europe and then the early season condensed schedule and now sending us down to Florida for three games in six days. Like, fuck you, man. Like, what's your problem? But yeah, like...
Bobby (1:00:35)
Yeah, I'm with you. I love it.
Chris (1:00:35)
Yeah, they're fifth in goals for in the league and they're 14th in goals against.
Tim Wood (1:00:43)
Yeah, so you know, they're very good team. They're the Stanley Cup champions and like I actually didn't really think about it, but you're totally right about the second game. Like that could get real nasty. Yeah.
Chris (1:00:54)
Yeah, Devils are second in Goals 4 and 21st in Goals Against.
Tim Wood (1:01:00)
I think just volume wise, I'd look for goals per game because we have played a lot more games than several teams.
Chris (1:01:09)
Yeah, yeah, but you know that I'm nervous man. I am nervous with these days games coming up
Bobby (1:01:16)
I'm gonna flip-flop the way that Tim predicted the next game. I'm gonna have the Devils winning the first game against them because I think this game really does mean everything to them, just like Edmonton. And I think they're gonna beat that. I think the Stanley Cup champs will be the ones to adjust to us and beat us on Thursday. And then we'll go ahead and a little payback to Tampa. So we're gonna come out of this 2-1. So we don't have to worry about all the rhetoric we just said. None of that's gonna happen. They're gonna be absolutely great and just on our way to a Stanley Cup.
Chris (1:01:42)
You lose you lose a close one to Florida either night you beat him the the other game and in you're coming out of this and people are going yeah the Devils are for real they really they took you know split the series down in Florida with the Panthers and the game they lost was I mean they were right there in it or you know whatever yeah that can be alright so so you're saying Bobby a double win and Tuesday followed by a loss on Thursday Tim you're gonna flip that
Bobby (1:01:46)
Gotta split.
Chris (1:02:09)
and you're gonna go with the devil's loss on Tuesday and a win on Thursday because we're still way too early in this season for me to like have a legit solid opinion about this team yet because I really don't you know I could see him losing both these games to Florida I could see him winning it so I really don't have enough of a sample size to say what I really think is gonna happen because I think they played well so I'm gonna just throw some good positive shit into the universe and say they take them both
Tim Wood (1:02:39)
There we go.
Chris (1:02:40)
They beat Florida to both games. I'm going to say that they can do it. mean, they just seeing how they played. mean, they take the just go a week or so back. know, Vancouver made it to the second round of playoffs last year, right? They won their division. We destroyed them, throttled them. Edmonton. We all know how they ended up last year. We throttled them. So why can't we do the same to the Panthers?
Bobby (1:02:57)
Let's listen, dude. Yeah.
You know just for the record out there anybody listen Chris you know when he throws out universe it's got a tremendous great track record of working out like San Jose preview it was right there. It's shirt.
Tim Wood (1:03:15)
Hey Chris Chris nailed the the three points for Jack three points for brat
Chris (1:03:15)
The universe listens, is what I'm saying.
I did, and how fucking close did I get to a peshy goal against the Islanders? I mean against San Jose. I got really close to that, because I set a peshy goal for that one.
Bobby (1:03:22)
He did. He's been doing great.
Tim Wood (1:03:32)
We have a new Twitter dad, Brian Pesci. His dad is pretty active on Twitter. It's fun. Yeah, absolutely. I'll ask him for her.
Bobby (1:03:41)
Yes.
Chris (1:03:41)
yeah, is he the one that saying that he wanted Dawson Mercer to score goal or predicted Dawson Mercer is going to score a goal? We should get him on the podcast.
Yeah, ask them. That'd be awesome.
Tim Wood (1:03:52)
Yeah, and we got to get Dan and Coda to add the anthem to the beginning.
Bobby (1:03:59)
Yep. I got to go back into the website and take away frequent contributor already. It took me like three hours to fucking build that Tim. I got to just add you up top, I guess.
Tim Wood (1:04:04)
Well, the one guy that we might not want to add, I know, I spend more time than I should on Twitter. This new kid, Gabe Trevino, took over for Novo at NJ.com, put out a...
Chris (1:04:19)
Everything you just said to me made no sense. I am so not in Twitter.
Tim Wood (1:04:22)
there's a new Ryan Nowasinski.
Chris (1:04:26)
Yeah, I've seen his stuff.
Tim Wood (1:04:27)
I am. I know. So yeah, yeah, Ryan Novacinski, right? He used to write for NJ.com. So he now writes about the Giants and they brought in a new devil's beat reporter who kind of put out a
Chris (1:04:33)
Yeah, okay.
Didn't we have Ryan on the show? Bobby?
Bobby (1:04:42)
I'm not sure. I mean, we have so many guests. hard to, you know, remember.
Chris (1:04:44)
Yeah, we did have Ryan on the show. No, but like back in like the playoffs two years ago. I think he was on. I think it was him. Okay, look ahead. I'm sorry.
Bobby (1:04:50)
think we maybe did, yeah.
Tim Wood (1:04:54)
So anyway, his replacement put out a goofy tweet last night, kind of mocking the Devils for when that empty netter hit the post. And people just piled on him, so they're not happy. Devils fans can be a fickle, fickle bunch.
Chris (1:05:02)
Yeah
Amen.
Yeah, they can. That's why I don't really. Yeah, I don't really go on, not because of Devil fans, just because I don't particularly like anything that goes on. You know, I just I'll go on occasionally to see, you know, what our show is doing or like comment on just just a devil thing here or there. But like, I can't get involved in that stuff, man. It's just dark sometimes.
Bobby (1:05:11)
Yeah, especially on the socials.
Tim Wood (1:05:31)
yeah, I spent all day there arguing with people about politics and the economy and, and, double stuff. was going back and forth with someone who said, that Timo is not pulling his weight, which I do disagree with. You know, the one interesting thing speaking to Timo is every year we've always had like one whipping boy that everyone can get on board. We'd be like, this guy fucking sucks. And we want him off our team. was David Severson, VTEC Vanecek, Alex Holtz.
Chris (1:05:34)
You
Alex Holtz.
Tim Wood (1:06:00)
He was more about the conversation Blackwood But this year, I don't think we have one particular guy that everybody's like fuck this guy get him off my team I just don't see that. I see a couple people being like, Dougie made another mistake or Luke
Chris (1:06:01)
Blackwood.
Alright, so we gotta start this then. This is what you're saying. We gotta start that Dougie needs to get off this fucking team right now.
Tim Wood (1:06:17)
No, no, no!
Bobby (1:06:18)
No, no, no, no. No, no, no. That's not what I heard.
Tim Wood (1:06:23)
Alright, so I looked into Doug. I looked into Dougie a little bit because I was concerned about his play and
Chris (1:06:25)
Achoo!
You're concerned about the social media hate he was about to get.
Tim Wood (1:06:32)
No, well, yeah, because and I think we need to knock off the Dougie slander. He's actually have a very good season to be honest all the immense metrics point to that. He's got 10 points or 12 points, I think in 18 games. He's getting a lot of assists on the power play. He's picking that up. He's
Chris (1:06:49)
His defensive game is terrible. His defensive game is terrible. I get it. He racks up assists. gets, he's a cornerstone of that first power play. I completely understand that. And I love the good that we get from him, but the dude defensively is a fucking liability. And that's, I know he's having a good season offensively, but I just think that he's a liability. I don't want to see him off this team.
Tim Wood (1:07:12)
Okay, let me finish.
Bobby (1:07:17)
What do the advanced metrics say?
Chris (1:07:20)
Yeah, what do they say about his defense?
Tim Wood (1:07:22)
and I'm looking up.
Bobby (1:07:24)
Does he not remind you of Derek? Chris? Get a little bit of Derek in his responses. No?
Chris (1:07:28)
no. It's just really weird because I hear him fine, but he's moving at a sloth's pace at everything he's doing. No, mean, this is like he's he's like barely moving and I but his all his words are coming out fine. And I am like mesmerized by it. It's so weird. like, I'm down thinking like, is he doing it on purpose? Like, is he fucking with us? Or is he really smart? Or is he really that bad of a lag? But he's doing it again.
Bobby (1:07:36)
That's just how he moves. told me that.
He's moving fine for me. Yeah. Gotta boot up that Commodore 128 and see what we can do from there.
Chris (1:07:58)
Really? I was gonna mention it before to see if it was just me, but it's definitely now you're doing it on fucking purpose. Alright, so what's his metrics there, Timmy?
Tim Wood (1:08:07)
I'm trying to look at so he's is leaving the team and expect a goal. So that's more of an offensive zone. I'm trying to find there's no percentage on this There's no
Chris (1:08:17)
on shittiness. give Dougie's defensive shittiness grade like a 62 % right now.
Tim Wood (1:08:21)
Okay, so here's the thing, like what we notice are gaffes, right? When he makes a mistake, we notice that. And he makes one, maybe two of those a game. What we don't notice is the other 90 % of what he does. When he gets puck out of the zone, his first pass is crisp out of the zone all the time, it's good.
Chris (1:08:44)
Okay.
Bobby (1:08:45)
Yeah, I'm with you.
Tim Wood (1:08:47)
I know I may be pixelated right now, but I'm staring at you.
Chris (1:08:52)
I'm listening with bated breath, please.
Tim Wood (1:08:54)
fact of the matter is we don't have Damon Severson anymore back there and if the worst thing we have is Dougie Hamilton in our D-Core I think we're going to be okay.
Chris (1:09:03)
And I completely agree, but to just go back to your original conversation, how you said that you just feel like this season's a waste if we don't have somebody to shit on the entire year. No, no, that's what I heard. And so I was just bringing Dougie up so everyone can start shitting on him because Tim, you're really the one who started this whole thing. So when.
Tim Wood (1:09:12)
No, no!
No
Bobby (1:09:16)
You
Tim Wood (1:09:23)
I was saying it's a good thing that we don't have a universal person that we're shitting on this year. I was saying the opposite. Sorry, I guess I didn't really totally make that that make sense.
Chris (1:09:29)
I didn't hear that.
Of course you did Tim.
Bobby (1:09:35)
It is a good thing that we don't have universal shitting.
Tim Wood (1:09:38)
So, yeah, so we have four defensive pairs, right? And expected goals percentage is basically like, you know, the share of goals that you're expected to get while you're on the ice. Sigintar Kovacevic is 64%. We've had four that have played. Sigintar Kovacevic is 64%. That's extremely good. Dougie and Dylan are 55%.
Chris (1:09:43)
Yes.
We have three defensive pairs.
okay, that's what you're saying.
Mm-hmm.
Tim Wood (1:10:00)
Hughes and Pesci are actually at 48 % Nemec case here at 31%. So that was the metrics that we were looking at with Nemec and Case. like, this is.
Chris (1:10:01)
Mm-hmm.
That's right.
Look, I really do like Dougie Hamilton and I, you know, I know what Dougie's gonna, Dougie will be that guy in a year or two from now when the contract starts getting old and if the team hasn't won anything yet and yes, I completely, but right now I think there's still a lot of game that he can do that's a lot of good, but he just has to tighten it up defensively. Cause some of his mistakes are just glaring. Now they're not as bad as they were last year.
when before he got injured where most of those ended up in the back of the net like we are actually getting you know decent colt ending and his partners are a lot better and helping in the forward teams a lot better and helping out defensively out and maybe it's just because the team has been so good defensively that just a few little glaring errors stand out a lot more i don't know
Tim Wood (1:10:57)
Meh, also the man ripped his titty, so, you know, cut him some slack on that.
Chris (1:11:01)
Yeah. And, know, if you go back to the first year that he came here, right. And he got his jaw busted and he would mix, missed a significant amount of time came back. He was not the same Dougie, the end of that year that that injury lingered that, you know, the, was just, then we get to the 112 point season and he's Dougie Hamilton again. He has a fantastic year and now you're coming off another injury. Maybe there's something to that.
Tim Wood (1:11:28)
Yeah, he's...
Chris (1:11:28)
You know, maybe there is just something to where maybe by another month or so when he's fully comfortable, he'll play it his form. And I hope you're right.
Bobby (1:11:31)
Mid-year, yeah. Yep.
Tim Wood (1:11:36)
No, it's just the net effect of this this contract in total when it's over probably won't be good I'll put it that way, you know, like he's been hurt a lot. He had one really good season and that's it I get it. I'm just trying to defend some because I've seen some Dougie slander so
Chris (1:11:42)
Yeah, exactly.
No, we should defend anyone on this team. Like, if they fuck up, they fuck up. But it's still our guys, you know? Unless somebody has a legitimate replacement for that person, then there's really nothing that you could argue about. Like, right now, who is even available that you could possibly put in Hamilton's spot that's gonna give you a better game than him? There isn't somebody, is there? Yeah. Yeah, so until you got somebody, I'm with you. It's just fun picking on them. Alright, anything else before we wrap this thing up?
Tim Wood (1:11:58)
Yeah.
There is somebody, no, All right.
No, one thing I don't know if we have time. Something interesting happened last week in kind of hockey world where the NCAA is allowing Canadian Hockey League players to come into college now before they weren't allowed to. So when you're a 16 year old kid, you kind of had to make the choice to go to junior A in Canada's or go the NCAA route. Now.
cause juniors is basically 16 to 20 year olds and college freshmen, the average age of college freshmen at hockey is actually 20 or 21, which blew my mind. Yeah. You a lot of Lorden I thought. So it's kind of interesting. So it's going to be interesting to see how that, that sort of plays out and what, the, the sort of second and third order, you know, issues that come out of that, you know, this may be an issue for the USHL, which then in turn may be an issue for the U S development program, you know, how this.
Chris (1:12:55)
Really?
That's where I was gonna go with this because like I've heard other people talk about this and I keep coming up with the okay what so what? Like why does that matter that they're allowed now to go like does it hurt somebody? Is it going to give somebody an edge over a league over another one? Like I just don't understand it. I don't understand why we should care.
Tim Wood (1:13:28)
So, well yeah, so if you want the junior, if you want the junior round, basically when you turn 20, there was no real other place for you to go except for like Canadian University, which isn't nearly as good as the US NCAA program. Now those kids can now come to after finishing their junior careers or during their junior careers. A kid can make the decision at 17, 18 and say, you know what, I'm going to college. Like I don't want to do this. Or a kid in college who's dumb as rocks is like, fuck this class stuff, I'm going to go play juniors.
Chris (1:13:50)
That's...
Tim Wood (1:13:58)
So they can kind of come back and forth. The USHL was built out to really be almost a development and feeder system into the NCAA. Now that the CHL, the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL can send kids to college, that's gonna provide an influx of talented kids that are over 20 coming now down south of the border into college. It's a pretty big deal.
Chris (1:14:06)
Right.
Okay, so this is a big deal, because this can legitimately take the NCAA to a whole different level.
Tim Wood (1:14:27)
Yes, and then the ripple effect where those kind of fringe Division 1 players will then go to other Division 1 schools, strengthening those programs. A lot of those Division 1 players will go Division 3, yeah.
Chris (1:14:36)
and maybe schools that don't even have programs will start getting programs. Yeah, that's pretty cool.
Tim Wood (1:14:42)
Yeah, so it's interesting. The ripple effect of how this all plays out is going to be something to watch. I think it's going to affect the USHL the most. But then there are places like the SEC, like imagine if Alabama and like Florida and Florida State and Miami actually had good Division 1 hockey teams. That would be nuts.
Chris (1:14:59)
Do they even have hockey teams at all?
Tim Wood (1:15:00)
They do, they're all club teams for the most part, one of my buddies is nephew plays for Florida. And it's fun, but they have self-financed scholarships, all that shit. So anyway, thought that was kind of an interesting development that happened in the last week or so in the hockey world.
Chris (1:15:16)
That is interesting. Bob, anything to add?
Bobby (1:15:20)
I do not. had a tweet from Stan Fischler another dig on Igor, but I must have deleted it. I can't find it. So maybe for the next show. He's just ripping into them again. I forget what it was. I know. I figured it's the best way to end it. I know. Instead, I'll just apologize to our two listeners that have mustaches. I didn't mean to offend you. Please hang around for a little bit. And to everybody else, I just apologize for the show in general. Sometimes we just go.
Chris (1:15:27)
come on!
Tim Wood (1:15:30)
Wait a minute.
Chris (1:15:30)
Yeah, but that's so much, that's the best way to close the show.
Hahaha!
Wait, I wanna see, where did you try and look for it?
Bobby (1:15:49)
I I guess you can go right to his page on Twitter. Stan Fischer, just, like I said, I deleted it.
Tim Wood (1:15:51)
Yeah, what's this one? For millions of dollars less, a New York Rangers got better goaltending in Detroit from non-inflationary Jonathan Quick than the inflationary
Poor little rich boy who'd better be better next time out than he did verse Buffalo. Peter Labialett should stick with the hot goalie quickly.
Bobby (1:16:13)
Isn't it great? He's just bashing them.
Chris (1:16:13)
Too quickly though.
Tim Wood (1:16:14)
He's, he is an artist. He is an artist. He's.
Bobby (1:16:17)
Yes. So yeah, great way to end it. There you go.
Tim Wood (1:16:22)
Yeah, there you go. He's on a generational hater tour, it's fucking hilarious.
Chris (1:16:27)
Yeah, he- I mean, he fucking despises Shisterkin. We gotta dive into that. We gotta dive into-
Bobby (1:16:30)
Yeah. It is crazy because he kind of covers the metro area like he always has. So to be that specifically biased against one player is awesome, quite frankly, that he doesn't care. What'd do? Took his wallet. Money hungry.
Tim Wood (1:16:30)
It's
Chris (1:16:35)
Yeah!
Tim Wood (1:16:36)
Yeah.
Chris (1:16:40)
Yeah, like what? We gotta dive into this a little more. We gotta find out what is with the hate. it's fu- yeah, it's not- Maybe. Maybe say something about Stan's mama, who's about 172 right now. Alright, boys.
Tim Wood (1:16:42)
Hey
Yeah.
Probably, yeah. Yeah, but, boys.
Bobby (1:16:55)
man.
