[00:01:11] It's like a different team. Yeah, it's so nice to see yet so depressing, right?
[00:01:18] It's just like God's. Yeah, it totally illustrates that these are the moves that we could have
[00:01:22] made earlier that would have helped. My trust in Tom Fitzgerald is extremely
[00:01:31] wings for a lot. Yeah, it's an all-time low. I'm hoping he turns it around. I don't know.
[00:01:36] He could see him have a good off season and hope he doesn't make these mistakes again
[00:01:42] because he has done a lot of good in the past but at this point you're like, man,
[00:01:47] if you were to just pull these triggers a little earlier, look at what we got going now.
[00:01:50] Yeah, he's saying some of the right things now too. He's talking about the general structure of
[00:01:55] the team and the deficiencies that we've seen since last year and the year and through the playoffs.
[00:01:59] So hopefully he stands by that and realizes that maybe you can't keep all the shiny things all at once.
[00:02:06] You know, I was thinking the other day. The only time that we heard from him before the trade
[00:02:12] deadline was when he came out talking about his extension and his promotion to President
[00:02:19] of hockey operations. So it was all about you in apparently in the beginning of the year,
[00:02:24] huh Tom? Like he didn't do anything for the team to help these guys out but you got your extension
[00:02:30] and your promotions so good on you but what you guys think of that Maple Leaf game on Tuesday night?
[00:02:37] Well, that was pretty spectacular. I mean they were like a force in nature that came. I mean
[00:02:42] you know, goal-tending again saved them. And it was nice to finally see
[00:02:49] you know what everybody's coming alive. You know the Jack looks great. I was yeah, brat,
[00:02:55] brats on fire right? I mean we got no complaints with brat, but Jack and that's a big turnaround
[00:03:00] from a couple of weeks ago where it was like you know what's going on with these guys.
[00:03:04] Another one of those will-to-win games like they just were not going to lose that game for
[00:03:08] whatever reason that was what ingrained in that day and started with Alan. Was that 25 shots in
[00:03:12] the first period? That's sick, that's a whole game. Yeah, you know. And the guys just had it going.
[00:03:18] I mean between Alan and everybody I don't mind them playing with the one or two goal lead.
[00:03:23] I got to tell you like one or two goal lead was not safe enough all season long. You know,
[00:03:27] I mean I don't want to believe they can end yeah. It was a little bit of both in that
[00:03:32] that Maple Leaf game right? Like you felt like once they got the lead that they were going to be
[00:03:37] able to hold on because of Alan back there and how well he was playing, but at the same time even
[00:03:41] when they were tied or fell behind I had like no doubt in my head that they were going to be able
[00:03:47] to score. They were doing everything right. I mean they of course you know they let it up a ton of
[00:03:53] shots. I think 41 shots on goal. That's a lot, but when you know this is kind of like what we
[00:03:59] expected from Banachek and Schmidt this year. I mean how many times will we say they got to outscore
[00:04:04] the problems? That was a typical goalie kept you in it gave you a chance and then whatever other
[00:04:10] deficiencies or whatever else you lacked on the defensive end you offensively made it up.
[00:04:15] And that was just a perfect game for what this team really is right now.
[00:04:21] Because look I mean we know we keep looking at the standings and tonight's a big night for
[00:04:27] the standings. What big games do we have tonight guys? I don't know all I know.
[00:04:31] Everyone's playing Panthers, Philly, Montreal and Pittsburgh, Blue Jackets I think are games that we
[00:04:37] all got. What about the Red Wings today? Red Wings, Carolina. Yeah alright so maybe Carolina can do
[00:04:43] something for us to help us out here. Yeah we were remarking the last game that nobody helped us
[00:04:48] that night. I mean it was a good that level is one but boy the team's given away points to people
[00:04:53] we need to catch and you know we couldn't catch a break even when I guess it was Philly lost they
[00:04:59] still picked up a point. Yeah they were dig down like two goals leading third to it's not like
[00:05:05] they were tied the whole game it's another one of those heart breaks you know a couple minutes left
[00:05:09] right like you know like you look at that Philly's playing Montreal tonight like there's I don't see
[00:05:14] any way Montreal one second so you know give that at least hopefully Carolina can maybe do some
[00:05:20] damage to Detroit there and keep them down a little bit Washington is also playing right?
[00:05:25] Yeah Washington's playing too. Who did they have? They have Toronto.
[00:05:29] Well so maybe Toronto will be pissed but I don't think Austin Matthews is playing. He actually
[00:05:34] I think he is playing here I don't think he is. He's skated this morning but I think he is playing
[00:05:38] okay so you know it and then you look at our schedule on it's like are we gonna be Toronto two more
[00:05:44] times are we definitely beating the Rangers Nashville Philly like these are all the games we have left
[00:05:50] hopefully we could beat the Sabers I know that I like that senators put up like five goals in
[00:05:54] the first period against the baseball. They scored six yesterday against them six two but
[00:05:58] these are the games that I worry about okay there was only a couple games ago against the team
[00:06:02] that's the lesser team and look what happened and they see that they did great against Toronto
[00:06:09] yeah that's that's awesome Toronto is ahead of them in the standings and if they would have lost
[00:06:15] you would have at some level understand why and these are the games that they shouldn't lose and
[00:06:20] this is what there's been the story all year you're dropping the games you shouldn't lose
[00:06:24] so we'll see you know it's been such a nice turnaround has it been perfect no and one of the
[00:06:31] knocks since the recent turnaround as you still have dropped a couple games to lesser teams.
[00:06:36] What's the percentage now like 13 I think we were like at 10 or something. I thought I saw
[00:06:42] 10 something today yeah it's immediately after the game they were claiming it was 13 but it
[00:06:49] goes up and down based on who else has played and sure I mean if all three of those teams in front
[00:06:54] of us lose tonight we go up without doing anything right right right but yeah Dan to your point
[00:06:59] I was sitting there today and I was looking I'm like what exactly have they done since the goalies
[00:07:02] came in I feel like well when we're more than it were three and two even 12 percent even on money
[00:07:08] buck 12 percent yeah okay okay ahead oh no that was it no it was cool what do you say I was
[00:07:15] the most I was looking at the stats since the goalies came in okay yeah right that was started with
[00:07:22] the Dallas game right yeah yeah so that was a win that's one oh no it was a ranger game
[00:07:30] that was didn't I wasn't that Kakakakana's first start yeah that's true oh I forgot about that
[00:07:35] that's true and he played well but they lost yeah that's right he did because Alan had to
[00:07:39] the visa problems yeah yeah yeah so we had the win against Dallas win against Pittsburgh win
[00:07:44] against the Jets win against the Islanders and the win against Toronto that's five we lost against
[00:07:49] the Rangers the coyotes the Knights and Ottawa so it's still for as well as they played five and four
[00:07:57] yeah and we still have 500 and you look at it and I was a crusher man that was a crusher
[00:08:01] on it was a crusher and Phoenix I think they definitely should have won that game too so if
[00:08:06] you flip those two over that's a you know and that's what I you know it's I can't say that
[00:08:11] its team has totally turned the corner because you know since even since the goalies came in
[00:08:16] and they're definitely doing their job even in the losses the team manages to drop a couple here
[00:08:22] and there at the lesser teams yeah and you know right now when everything's like so hyper focused
[00:08:26] on the points because you're just trying to get the playoffs you know we're really examining
[00:08:30] that hard to some extent your team's always gonna let you down once in a while against a lesser team
[00:08:37] we've always been familiar with that happening with the Devils and any other team but you know
[00:08:42] this has really been the story this year definitely yeah and I mean unless they have
[00:08:49] another level to kick it up too which we haven't seen yet and they should I mean if they're
[00:08:55] if they did make the playoffs they better have that other level but this is when you have to kick
[00:09:00] it up there now like it what if there is another level to this team and they got to get to it
[00:09:05] and see what they can do because right now Washington is playing better hockey than the Devils
[00:09:10] the fires are playing better hockey than the Devils the Red Wings I was I kind of think like
[00:09:16] you might be able to catch the Red Wings but are you going to be able to catch two of those teams
[00:09:20] because it's pretty much four teams over two spots right so yeah and so let Philly in Washington
[00:09:28] kind of battle over that third spot and then it'll be us and Red Wings and whoever's left
[00:09:33] for that wildcard spot but it's it is gonna be hard and Chris I know you're not a draft guy
[00:09:38] you know you're not into the draft picks and stuff which I do believe the draft is important but
[00:09:42] do you think you guys think we're good enough to like it says have you guys seen anything this
[00:09:48] year to tell you that we're really able to compete in the playoffs this year like do you think
[00:09:52] if we actually got in there do we have the the team that can actually compete or should we kind of
[00:09:57] you know I don't know I'm trying to say never ever ever throw it in where this team is throwing
[00:10:03] your hat but are we good enough to actually I mean I can't bet on us going far in the playoffs at
[00:10:10] this point objective reality but I do think this team has like if everything clicks right
[00:10:16] this team has the ability to go on a run and it could be a surprisingly wrong long run but you
[00:10:21] know I do I think it's gonna happen well I don't even know if we're gonna make playoffs do I feel
[00:10:27] confident we're gonna get out of the first round against anybody not necessarily no I can't
[00:10:31] feel confident with that but I know the capabilities there I mean it's not like we got a team full
[00:10:37] of people who don't have talent it's a matter of can they keep this talent y'all together and
[00:10:42] the question is like if they make it into playoffs that's gonna take an extraordinary run of
[00:10:48] off of games at that point you will have to have some confidence in this team right because they
[00:10:53] have just done it was going to be impossible yeah and and then I might change my tune from where I
[00:10:58] sit today not only is it not likely they make the playoffs if you magically put them in there you
[00:11:03] can't expect them to go very far with the level they've been playing yes like Bob said even
[00:11:07] since the goalies you know it's not been the kind of record that will necessarily make you
[00:11:13] go really far in the playoffs well and that's the problem is I haven't seen that streak this year at
[00:11:16] all I haven't seen anything to tell me the day can go on a run which I hope they do I mean you know
[00:11:20] I'm well they've won five four out of five right now I think four out of five you know I mean
[00:11:25] which you know that's great but you know again the runway is very short so you know on tomorrow night
[00:11:33] well how I kind of think today's and tomorrow is gonna go we're gonna get everything that we need
[00:11:38] today and they'll lose the Buffalo tomorrow and that is only because of how I felt all year just
[00:11:46] from the evidence we've seen all year now like I said if there's another level they need to get to it
[00:11:52] now and they need to you know start playing that way because I agree with what Dan said if they were
[00:11:58] to make it at sitting with nine games left a 12 percent chance of getting in and if they somehow
[00:12:05] got it and it would have to be not only other teams kind of falling off a little bit but the devil's
[00:12:10] playing the best hockey season so right Montreal is one in one nothing I guess the flyers right now
[00:12:16] stop the game then and we're good and Maple Leafs won over the course one of the only caps only so
[00:12:22] Maple Leafs won already no they have one nothing over the whole one said they won I'm sorry okay I
[00:12:27] was like what time was that game all right so you know they're there ability to play better against
[00:12:34] the competition is a little comforting if by some magic we get again if we get in I think we're
[00:12:39] gonna be playing it a brand of hockey that probably weren't at least a legitimate chance of getting
[00:12:44] through a round or two I don't know that we're honest Stanley Cup favorites by any means but they
[00:12:50] do play a little better with the other teams short of Caroline I wouldn't want to get them
[00:12:54] first round I just think that they would bounce us quick and collectively of late they are showing
[00:13:00] more of the ability to play those types of playoff games but yeah a long way to go and if you know
[00:13:08] logistically looking at what they've done so far this year it doesn't paint a picture of
[00:13:12] you know pushing through the playoffs by any way but if they win they beat Buffalo and
[00:13:16] they beat Pittsburgh their next two opponents right so then it would be what six out of last seven
[00:13:22] and then you go into oh Wednesday night against the Rangers that being a huge huge game and we
[00:13:29] talked about we'll talk about it next week more but like for so many different reasons it's not
[00:13:34] just the points there is so much just pride and everything else that's on the line in that game
[00:13:41] if they can win that game and maybe even when it decidedly when it I think that can really be
[00:13:49] a catalyst for the final push to make you a bit of a believer at that point yeah you know if they
[00:13:55] can win now if they go on that run and win the next three I mean yeah so that could then maybe
[00:14:03] those odds are are cooking up over 50 percent I just hope the team is not looking at all those
[00:14:09] things that we're thinking about right now because if you're the doubles if you're that team you
[00:14:13] just got to do a one game at a time thing sure you know because it's so overwhelming to look at
[00:14:17] the odds right now I mean here's the thing if we get there with say three out of the next four
[00:14:24] points at minimum right then that ranger game becomes literally the biggest game of the year
[00:14:29] for all the reasons you just said and it would keep this kind of streak going if we sit the
[00:14:33] bat in these next two games we lose two in a row it's gonna mean nothing no I think that game is
[00:14:39] still gonna mean a lot but it won't be about playoffs we're about next year yeah exactly and then
[00:14:45] the direction of the club and character you know and then maybe you take one of those guys out so
[00:14:49] they're not gonna be at 100 percent for their playoff run oh yeah absolutely if you lose the next two
[00:14:54] that your main goal in that ranger game should just be hurt everybody yep yeah everyone you know
[00:15:00] they're gonna get us one point away from the playoffs and just break our hearts on the little
[00:15:04] last but most likely uh yeah it's most likely that's what's gonna happen but like I said if you can
[00:15:11] get it to that coin flip because the devils do have one ace up their sleeve they own tie breakers
[00:15:17] over everybody above so even if we are tied at points with any one of those teams from one of
[00:15:23] those spots it's ours yeah so because we've got zero points and regular in you know overtime losses
[00:15:30] yeah and then it appears from but it individually down to that we'd be grateful for the fact that
[00:15:34] we didn't we were bad enough to not make it to overtime because we ended up
[00:15:38] just getting the win and the losses what how many shootouts did we have this year maybe not two
[00:15:44] no none I swear we zero now we have five bonus points right I think that's it we call them
[00:15:50] participation points right I know participation no and we have not had a
[00:15:56] issue look it's Chris that's been one of Chris's um yeah I made predictions yeah only four
[00:16:01] overtime losses actually that's it where are the times we go to overtime nine no four right well
[00:16:08] not four losses the wins I don't know I don't know okay oh yeah how would we do that's not on
[00:16:12] there just a win yeah but no shootouts yet so tomorrow night like like you said though Dan
[00:16:19] like yeah the Ranger game on Wednesday could end up being the most important game in season
[00:16:23] tomorrow night against Buffalo some important game in the season right now yeah and you know
[00:16:27] Buffalo was fighting for their playoff lives and then they got trounced by Ottawa yesterday so
[00:16:33] what kind of mood are they gonna be in you know that's the other thing like it's it's uh you know
[00:16:39] you're not going to be playing there's not going to be an easy game it is sometimes dangerous
[00:16:43] but play a team that just got their asses beat yeah so I'm sorry I'm absolutely you know and
[00:16:50] too many times we've just seen the the slow starts are just it's gonna kill us if they even made
[00:16:56] it to the playoffs that's gonna kill them I mean that's when the goal tending is really helped us
[00:16:59] right oh yeah I mean it's been good the whole game don't get me wrong whether it's Alan or you
[00:17:04] know it doesn't matter they're both been excellent but really where they've saved us is early on in
[00:17:11] the games because it was slow starts like he said they were really really flat against Toronto and
[00:17:16] Toronto came out and threw like what would they have like 20 something shots in the first period yeah
[00:17:21] and they were all high quality shots it was like there's no way we're winning this game like this
[00:17:27] but they held us in there enough to do that so that's like spectacular that's what we mean
[00:17:32] even when Alan started to let in a couple of goals you look at the couple of guys that got in
[00:17:35] their pure goal scores man you just can't fault them they just they have yeah
[00:17:39] knack for score in Austin Matthews and Newlander wasn't right yeah I mean yeah

[00:20:06] this former devil has played on a total of five NHL teams
[00:20:15] is he playing still this former devil's retire yeah that would be 23 years in league
[00:20:22] he's an Iron Man in the 80s yeah um yeah I played over I think I told you five teams right
[00:20:31] five teams he's uh he shoots left primarily been a left wing times his plate center
[00:20:41] he has played in over 900 games in NHL and over 170 with the doubles
[00:20:50] Stefan Rache me no wait you got one dude yeah
[00:20:54] yeah yeah yeah this former devil is born and raised in Ontario province of Ontario
[00:21:06] he played junior hockey there as well what year was he born
[00:21:13] he gave us a birthday who's in the 2001 draft I can look up his birthday if it comes to that

[00:22:06] after his junior hockey career when played US college hockey um and he is a usual inheritance

[00:23:51] the NHL what game was it uh probably NHL 94 95 so that's the most yeah or that was a lot of fun

[00:24:05] year after that but 94 always holds a special place for a lot of people do you question
[00:24:10] no I mean I got my kid PlayStation 5 got in the most recent NHL like this 24 played him
[00:24:18] once or twice he has to play but yeah I don't have any time for that all right it looks so good
[00:24:23] though doesn't it isn't it amazing how much they've evolved to be playing every day dude I remember
[00:24:28] how high tech NBA Jam looked when they had it next to the sawmill remember that Chris on the board
[00:24:32] walk where was it lucky Leo's yeah that was fun remember it looked back then it looked like I mean
[00:24:37] to me that was pretty high tech I remember being like we should tell Tony we should tell Tony
[00:24:42] we had NBA Jam in our house oh really the actual game machine yeah right next to the pool table
[00:24:48] and the pinball machine and the pivot machine that's awesome awesome freaking pretty sweet
[00:24:53] well shit I remember Dan I remember you playing Mortal Kombat man we would go to that pool hall
[00:24:57] and you would just stand there and play in games we're like so addictive I would just play with those
[00:25:02] cigarettes man and just you would just smoke and I don't think there's ever been a game that has
[00:25:07] consumed more of our life than the original Tony Hawk Pro skater that never played it oh we played
[00:25:14] that especially at that one at same house we were there constantly playing that like we like
[00:25:20] we're trying to read you listen oh and I just played effort yeah yeah we'll be an Anthony went on
[00:25:25] and we would sit down in front of the TV and then like this is like before we had internet and
[00:25:29] stickers I remember like getting the cheat codes and we had one computer upstairs and getting
[00:25:35] the cheat codes and finding those like perfect balance and you know unlimited everything did it
[00:25:40] was awesome and but that game was so great I feel like we talked about this like early last season
[00:25:48] on the podcast too because I remember we all had like these different special ability or one was
[00:25:52] a little better than the others like whether there's air tricks or just the racing and low ride
[00:25:58] so we'd always kind of constantly be battling against each other because there's certain things
[00:26:01] like you just couldn't beat Danny and yeah I thought about that game a few months ago I know I'm
[00:26:08] like I wonder if you could still find it and play it like what I never did I wouldn't even have a
[00:26:13] game system did we at that apartment we had nothing I collect all the tapes oh back there no
[00:26:18] we had nothing we were looking at the fucking fish on that the big giant in the Marlin
[00:26:22] yeah yeah whatever yeah yeah and then you got addicted to a lot of stuff and I
[00:26:28] oh yeah yeah what do you say yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

[00:26:53] brother-in-law has like a bunch of arcade games in his basement he said a lot of those old fighting games
[00:26:57] yeah so like I didn't play him forever and it's all muscle memory like I remember
[00:27:03] and he like plays this stuff and I destroyed him like I can't not know how to play that anymore
[00:27:09] like it's like yeah last time last time I was out traveling for work we went to one of those places
[00:27:16] tons of you know throwback games and bowling and all that and I went over to the mortal combat machine
